Not a brunette so YMMV, but if you are looking for a purple toner to use in the shower I am obsessed with Blonde Brilliance, you can also get it at Sallys. I am a platinum ash blonde who has hair that pulls warm/yellow, and this is the best toner/shampoo I have ever used (and I've tried tons).

This purple lathering toner changed my life when I used to be blonde

Ya, roots are a PAIN.
What I did with my purple is throwing chunks and streaks and varying sizes all over, and did a solid block underneath, but stopped with plenty of room before I reached the top of my hair so that you could see where the chunks met my scalp, and I didn't have to worry about roots at all!
Plus, it created this cool effect where the lavender mixed in seamlessly with my blonde, and the contrast almost made my hair look silver!
Lavender can fade pretty quickly, but it's not that hard to touch up once you get the color in, and I found that the purple shampoo I use to maintain my blonde actually preserved the purple WAY longer than any actual color protection products I've used!
Edit: I accidentally a word.
Edit 2: This is the product I'm talking about. It's described as a "lathering toner" but it's essentially a temporary color-depositing shampoo. It will probably cool down your natural hair a bit and eliminate some of the more warm tones. There is one for warm blondes too, but this one will preserve your purple if that's the route you decide to take.
Advertised as sulfate free, but it does a few sulfate "cousins" in it. However, it's much less drying than any purple shampoo I've used before, contains moisturizing ingredients, and it's made in the US. It can be a bit drying, but I only need it once a week, and I follow it up with a deep conditioner and that usually counteracts any dryness.
WARNING: If you do purchase this, don't use it too often, or leave it in too long, because it WILL turn all of your hair purple. Very temporary, it will come out in only 1 or 2 washes if that happens (although sometimes I do it on purpose because the color it turns is very pretty)
