Trader Joe's beans and a blade grinder is a pretty cheap step up.

I also used to have a little french press/travel mug combo that I would use for making free coffee from a hot water maker in the cafeteria.

Yeah most people there had obviously never bought a French press from the most common maker, Bodum. I couldn't find their printed instructions but they're right here:

I'd take a stab at it except I think they already did a perfect job at it. Everyone who said a combination of both is best was right, as that's what the actual company decided to go with. No, you don't need a fucking page full of text to accomplish your goal.

BTW, holy shit that entire thread was annoying.

So basically a portable French press?

You know that the Oomph just finished a successful campaign on Kickstarter, right? Basically identical looking to this.

And you have stuff like this on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Bodum-16-Ounce-Travel-Coffee-Press/dp/B000F3NQG2

Just wondering what's different here.

I'd also like to see a travel mug with a built in french press.

I have one and it works really well... you'd think that it would be terrible about over extracting, but the filter is so fine (nylon or some other synthetic) that it acts like a one way membrane. You can turn the cup over when it's empty and barely get a drop to come through.

Yes, that's it, I have this plastic one. I used commute with it in one of my cages for some time.

I used to use something like this: Bodum coffee press mug and then offload the steeped tea into a mug at my desk. I liked being able to microwave the water in it. I don't think it's BPA free, though.

Nope. Overextraction = bad. Now I really need to get a thermal carafe. I use a glass one to hold it for short periods before serving, but it gets cold fairly quickly. :(

I still don't see how these work very well. It just seems like it would be terribly bitter by the time you drink it all.:
