arnica gel!! it won't cover them up like makeup but i swear by this stuff to heal bruises. sometimes they disappear overnight. it is magic.
You say you want to take off a week - what I would say is find out when the cast comes off and what's happening in surgery; if you're getting your nasal bones broken ("osteotomies"), yeah, take off a few days after the cast comes off.
You're going to still be swollen at 2 weeks if it's closed nose rhino probably not so badly you can't go outside. 10-14 days is the minimum I'd take off if you can, but again, that's because I had to leave a cast on 7 days (and had open rhino).
If you can take off 3-4 weeks (when you will be within sights of "dinner ready") without fear of pissing anyone off, do so (I've never had a job where I felt I had that luxury - it sucks)
You will likely not be in a huge amount of pain unless your surgeon is an asshole. It resolves by 2 weeks. At most you will be dully sore and feel pressure that comes with swelling, maybe some headaches, for a few weeks, but the worst is in the 2-3 weeks. (Caveat - I have never had my nasal bones broken, so I could be wrong but I just don't think so, based on what other patients say)
If swelling doesn't bother you, I would only take off 2-3 weeks. Ask the surgeon how long you'll be in a cast. Mine popped off b/c my nose was both solid enough and oily by day 5 but I was supposed to keep it on 7 days
Ask the surgeon about this before surgery and how he would be taping your nose. He should give you an extra roll of tape in the kit they give you post-op
(Obviously pick up painkillers, anti-vomiting drugs, etc. BEFORE surgery)
