This is very common... happens when drywall or plaster is butted directly up against the window casings because of the expansion and contraction of window and door casings with humidity changes. Properly drywalled, a 1/8 to 1/4 inch gap is left around the casing to allow for expansion without cracking and then covered with trim.

Gouge it out with a wood chisel or knife and put seam tape in it before mudding over it. Or use 3M All Purpose Putty without the tape instead of spackle because it won't crack (Home Depot carries it, too - by the adhesives and caulk). It's just low-odor Bondo. If you have regular Bondo already, you can just use that. I use it frequently for drywall repairs.
