EDIT 2: So I just got that controller, mini review:

It is very cheap, the joysticks, the d-pad, the buttons, are just mediocre. The biggest problem over-all is the right joystick is in an absolutely awful location, you cannot comfortably use the buttons without rubbing against it. The only positive is it is more comfortable to hold than the top-mount you often see, just as long as you don't use the buttons. Overall would not recommend.

That's what the gamepad is for. If you like the PSP form factor, there's this, this or this.

Alternately, if you enjoy gaming on tablets and want a larger Wii U/ PSP kind of setup, there's the PG-9023. PG-9083 and the BTC-938.

I have a Note 9 as well and I can't recommend the Wee controller enough. If you do want to get it, you might want to look into the Wee 2 as well, as it's (assumedly) an improvement. I've never bothered looking into it though because the Wee controller does everything I want it to.

The form factor of the iPega PG-9033 is nice, but the issue with that gamepad design is that it is incredibly top-heavy with modern smartphones and will put discomfort on your wrists while playing.

I stopped using my Moga Hero Power for that reason alone, as when I made the transition from my S3 Mini to my S8, it was incredibly uncomfortable to use after 30 minutes of play.

If you want to stick with a universal iPega controller, I would recommend the iPega PG-9055 ("Red Spider").

It pretty much fits any phone and even 7" tablets because it uses fasteners to grip your phone, rather than a telescopic arm.

If your phone is on the smaller side (i.e. 5"-5.75") and you use a thin TPU/rubber case, the "Wee" gamepad is probably the highest quality one money can buy. It's an exact copy of the PS Vita's design, except with the left thumbstick and d-pad inversed. All of the buttons are clicky microswitches like the PS Vita, rather than being membrane+contact like everything else. The L2 and R2 triggers aren't analog, but they basically act as a second set of bumpers (and have the same clicky microswitches).

This isn't the exact model I bought but looks exactly the same. Like having a switch for $40.

I’m afraid not lol. I was looking for it too before I bought gpd xd. Your best bet is to buy an old psp go and run cfw on it. It sucks though especially the battery life.

There are various controllers you can attach to your phone if you really want to. eg. this. (Not recommending that one in particular, it was just one of the first "converter"-style ones to come up in a quick search.)

This ones only $40 works via Bluetooth and fits most phones. Also works with any emulator and won't cover up half your screen.

I use this, except I snapped off the goofy plastic paw print analog covers and replaced them with a couple of these. Super easy mod, and the pad fits my S8 Plus very well in both portrait and landscape mode.

Heroes Evolved has partial controller support. It works best with a telescopic controller like the Fyldigi Wee so you can still reach the screen with your thumbs when needed. Also the Wee comes with access to a touch mapping app developed by the manufacturer that has preset mappings for games like Arena of Valor. Ymmv, I don't really play AoV on mobile but I do have hundreds of games of Heroes Evolved using a controller (some champions work better than others).

I ordered [this controller] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B06XKSNCTM) to go with my S10, looks like a perfect fit.

I highly, highly recommend John's SNES emulator. He made NES and GBA ones as well. I purchased all of them and have used each of them thoroughly. They may cost a few dollars but the way I see it I'm gaining access to thousands of games for less than the price of a book. They all support controllers and have heavily modifiable virtual interfaces and screen aspect ratios. If you are interested in a gamepad I was recently eyeing this one. Most likely going to purchase it on Christmas to test it out.

There's a few other controllers like it, in general they're called "telescopic controllers". Flydigi makes a few including the Wee, Wee 2, and Wee 2T. They're more on the expensive side, but they're custom made rather than using generic parts such as the Daqi M1 (the IPEGA Red Knight basically is the same controller but with a worse firmware).

Firstly, thank you so much for the detailed response. I knew nothing about this stuff so this is insanely helpful! I just have two questions if that's okay:

You mentioned that the controllers will work with emulators on Android no problem which is good to hear since that's what I'm getting it for, but I'm wondering how exactly they work. The emulator programs I've used don't seem very advanced and they don't have a lot of options. Maybe if you can just tell me what you had to do to get your own controllers working that'd be great

Also seconding this. I have an S6 Edge as well and I'm using this controller which works really well and is small enough to carry in a pocket. Currently playing Monster Hunter Freedom Unite on PPSSPP and it runs like a dream.

Oops didn't notice. Was looking at others like the gamevice(which is just for iOS I believe) and this one, which pretty much is a psp like device like you want.) Not sure of the quality on either of these.

I have 2 complaints. I needed to take my last phone (LGG2, not a huge phone) out of its case (Otterbox commuter-size) to fit it. The toher issue is the weight distribution at a comfortable 45deg angle makes it back-heavy. Sitting position isn't ideal for extended periods, may cause wrist discomfort. In bed with knees curled up this wasn't a problem. Other than that this is a great controller, connected to my PC as well.

I have NOT tried this, but I'm considering it. Again, the size of your phone will determine whether this will work for you. Also the shape of the controller isn't modern-style, it's not ergo or anything. I'm wondering if it's overpriced but it might be worth the wrist comfort.

That's all the experience I have. I know I don't like a separate controller for sure, so I just wanted to recommend something with a clamp.
