I think you already knew that there is no such thing as a BIFL electric razor. You're really here for a quality, value recommendation, right?

Background: About 6 years ago I started shaving with an old fashioned double edged (DE) safety razor (a beautiful Edwin Jagger, wonderful smelling shaving soaps, a fancy brush, and cool extras like after-shave balm and alum block application). But I grew tired of the work (time) and the concentration required to keep from cutting myself. I too wanted convenience.

I recently researched the hell out of electric razors and have been happily shaving with the Panasonic 8249S for about 1 month.

Some tips:

  • You should visit electric-shaver-guide.com. It has the most thoughtful, thorough reviews I've found.

  • I've heard anecdotal evidence that rotary blade style razors are cheaper to run because the blades last much longer than oscillating blade/foil style razors. That didn't matter to me because I had poor personal experience with the rotary style.

  • If you can afford it and your chosen model has an optional cleaning station go for it. You don't have to use it but the convenience is nice. Braun and Panasonic's cleaning solutions have lubricant in them. Washing your razor in soap and water is just as effective and doesn't use up (dirty) the cleaning solution.

  • If you wash your razor with soap and water you should lubricate the blades. In the spirit of BIFL I recommend just a drop of mineral oil or baby oil (which is just scented mineral oil). You could also buy lubricant sold specifically for electric razors x y but it's not worth the extra money to me.

  • I already decided on a foil-style razor and since I wanted to keep things simple I limited my candidates to Braun and Panasonic products. Both brands are well regarded.

  • Panasonic is cheaper.

  • When comparing two products of the same brand you get what you pay for. (more $ gets you more stuff)

  • There are home-brew recipes for Braun cleaning solution elsewhere on the Internets. This would save you money.

  • I have found no credible recipes for Panasonic cleaning solution. It's cheap enough anyway and since I usually manually wash the razor I won't have to replace the solution often.

Enjoy your razor. My skin took about a week to get used to the new shaving style. Give yourself 2-3 weeks (irritation will lesson over time). My shaves currently take 3-5 minutes and are close enough for a day of work. Shaving with a DE razor me took much much longer but were super smooth.

TL;DR I've been in your shoes recently. Buy a Panasonic foil razor. Spend as much as you can afford. It's not frugal or BIFL but the convenience is worth it.

EDIT: I don't mean to be creepy but I read your post about the car you drive and decided you have plenty of money. Buy a Braun 7 Series. It's the best and I don't have any indication that it's less reliable or sturdy than the alternatives.

I have the Braun 790cc foil razor and love it. It cuts a close shave every time, and only requires that you purchase a new blade every 18 months. The truth in my experience of electric razors is that it takes at least twice as long to shave.

My facial hair grows in thick enough that my former Norelco $89 electric razor would always do a shabby job. For years I switched back to a standard Mach 3 Turbo manual razor, but did not like how insensitive it was to my sensitive skin. High-end electric foil razors with electric razor pre-shave lotion are the way to go, imo.

Pro Tip: For guys with extra sensitive facial skin like me, apply aloe vera lotion post-shave instead of your typical facial lotion and you will be pleased with the result.

I have to be real careful about razors. Last time I tried a new razor, it ruined my face for weeks. And I still haven't fully recovered.

I use one of those self cleaning Braun electric razors. I apply Shave Secret and wet shave with the electric razor.

I make sure to let it do it's full clean cycle after every shave to keep it clean.

After I shave, I apply an AHA to help exfoliate the dead skin away. I wait about 20 minutes and then lightly apply CeraVe in the tub to moisturize.

This has greatly reduced any shaving induced acne.

I use the Braun Series 7. It comes with a nice travel case and a full charge will last 3+ weeks I have found. It's not cheap but is really nice!

I find that the circle ones are just not as good and they beat up my face.

I have this thing and I love it:

I went with this, "Braun Series 7 790cc-4 Electric Foil Shaver" last December.

LPT: Get a battery-powered electric razor. Now you don't need shaving cream, water and towels to get a shave. If you have some money to spare: this is the shit. It's expensive but the thing should last about 10 years. You'll have to replace the cutter block after some years, though. The cleaning refill will last a couple months if you reseal them after use.

I've been using a razor all my life and endured a nasty MRSA infection about ten years ago. Still get irritation from time to time. Finally had enough of being paranoid about the next infection and just came home today with a new Braun Series 7 790cc shaver. I just used it on my face and head and cannot believe how good it did. Sure it's expensive as shit, but the thing should last 10 years and the lack of irritation is worth it!

I find this gives a very close shave with minimal irritation

I feel stubble after shaving.
Not immediately perhaps, but within an hour (think leaving house and arriving at office)

I use an electric razor, a fairly good one actually - or so I've been led to believe.

That one. I replace the blade often, and machine wash it every day after use.

Perhaps it's time I embrace the blade.

I was sick of using dull razors as well. Take the plunge, my friend, you'll be happy you did. It may take a few shaves to get used to the foil shave, but it's quite nice, and better than a rotary shave.

FYI: A typical shaving foil will last about 6 months with regular daily use, and they are about $20 to replace. My last electric shaver (whole device) lasted me ~6 years, until my dumb ass dropped it and broke it. If I hadn't dropped it, it would have lasted another 3 at least because the battery was starting to diminish. They also have a liquid cleaning cartridge which you use after every 3rd or 5th shave depending on how ape-ish you are. The liquid lasts about a month, and is about $30 for a 3pack on amazon.

It may seem like a lot of stuff, but the electric shave is much more convenient, in my opinion. It may not be as close of a shave, but definitely more convenient.
