A lot of what I said is from before my time at LEGO (I started in October 2006), and many of the insights come form this book: http://www.amazon.com/Brick-Rewrote-Innovation-Conquered-Industry/dp/0307951618 by David Robertson, it's a great read for LEGO fans and anyone interested in how business fail and how to turn this around.

The LEGO Company of today is a long way from what it was back then, when I joined the Design team we (I started with 9 other designers) took it up to the unprecedented number of 80 designers, since then the company has grown and grown and there are now over 230 of us! It's an exciting time but we all know we must never return to those days of the early 2000's.

Bionicle wasn't fully to blame but they were part of the problem as well as the part of the solution. The line helped keep them afloat while the troubles started because it was their first highly successful in house IP. But it contributed to the woes because it was so costly to develop, especially with the ever increasing numbers of specialized pieces. Licensed lines helped them too, that was probably their biggest boon that helped turn them around.

For anyone curious on how LEGO turned itself around, I wholly recommend reading Brick-By-Brick: How LEGO Rewrote the Rules of Innovation and Conquered the Global Toy Industry. Its a interesting read, even if you're not a Lego fan, because it details how close the company really was to collapse, as well as how many things had to change around the company to complete the turn around that occurred.

"Brick by brick" is a pretty cool book that's both about the history of LEGO but mainly about how LEGO went from almost going bankrupt to being the leading toy company in the world in the early 2000s: http://www.amazon.com/Brick-Rewrote-Innovation-Conquered-Industry/dp/0307951618/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1449331191&sr=8-2&keywords=brick+by+brick
