For a home user, I think Brother or HP's laser models are pretty good. The question is how much do you print. My experience is brother is in the ideal spot for most home users.

This guy is a pretty solid workhorse. A solid 40ppm and the high yield cartridges run you $100 for ~8,000 pages. It hooks up to your network wirelessly too, which is nice. You can find it for a bit under MSRP, so about $300 initial investment.

If you don't need to print as much step it down to something like this. Just shy of 30ppm, you can probably find it for about $100, and about $50 for 2,600 pages. However you can absolutely see the price difference on your toner. Smaller cheaper printers are less cost efficient on cartridges.

If you absolutely must have color understand that you are going to pay for it. Your choice is either biting the bullet and paying a lot up front or cheaping and and getting fucked by ink costs like you currently are. You can go with something like this. However, you are going to be dropping $1,000 on your high yield black, cyan, magenta, and yellow cartridges at the start. They'll last you about 6,500 pages and probably get your cost per page down to a bit over 10 cents per page, which is fantastic for color. You aren't going to get cheaper. Remember image heavy stuff will eat up a lot more toner. Another thing is that good color printers let you send print jobs as monochrome and this tells them to not use any color toner.

Thing is you are dropping $1,000 up front. So you need to do the math. You can get that first wireless printer running for $300 and a bit over a penny a page. That's pretty good. So with that extra $700 are you really going to print 1,400 pages worth of color? Also note that while you will pay 50-65 cents per page if you go to a store, some of the stuff you print would have eaten up 2-3 pages worth of toner if it is image heavy. As you can see I highly recommend asking yourself the question "how bad do I really need color?" The cost differences are huge.

Remember, printers are pay now or pay later. If you choose pay later you pay a lot more long term. Any $50 office max/staples deal is a loss leader that will run up the costs in ink and break. A solid laserjet will last you years and can be maintained. You buy kits to replace rollers ect. If you can build a PC you can maintain a printer.

I highly recommend a Brother printer! Especially if you are using a Print Release Terminal such as LPT One. We have the older version of this printer https://www.amazon.com/Brother-HL-L8360CDW-Networking-Automatic-Replenishment/dp/B06XDSMKLT/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?crid=2EDVPMYVGL8KF&keywords=brother+hl-l8360cdw&qid=1557509769&s=gateway&sprefix=Brother+HL%2Caps%2C282&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1 but they are both the same make, just different model numbers. These printers print extremely fast, and have a nice life span as well. The colors are amazing, and your patrons will definitely compliment you whenever they print something out in color.
