I replaced my tarp with one of these Wet Weather Poncho
It cut down some weight, and takes up a lot less room.
You'll want to add a good rain poncho that is sized to fit over your backpack. The mil-spec ones are great, but kind of heavy and bulky. On the other hand, they won't shred the first time you use them.
I would not recommend trying to use a disposable poncho or a trash bag, they'll get ripped up and then you won't have anything.
Speaking of backpacks, will the one you listed hold all the stuff on your list?

Good point about bags for essential items - I usually Ziploc bag clothes, but I'll throw my sleeping set in trash bags as well.
I do have an extra stuff sack, I'll try fitting my tent into it and seeing how it fits. Thanks for the advice!
