Laptop user here. Get this one. It's worked flawlessly for me.

So I have bad news to report. I have NOT been able to successfully run the Valve Index with extension cables.
I had the Vive Pro headset running FINE with the following setup
Like I said this setup was working fine withe the Vive Pro.
With the Valve Index (which uses DP on BOTH sides), I tried the following configurations:
Configuration 1:
This results in NO image at all. It even crashes Steam VR! (some error message about enabling direct mode...). I have tried multiple refresh rate including 90Hz with the same result
Configuration 2:
This time there is an image, BUT if you look at black areas you clearly see "sparkles" (like glitter) which clearly shows there is some degradation and/or noise. And it is only a 6Ft cable (which is too short for my setup but wanted to try it anyway).
So I am really bummed that the latest and greatest and expensive VR device REQUIRES you to be plugged into your PC directly and given the fact that the cable is just big enough for a 3mx3m area, that is quite frustrating... Supposedly the new base stations supports bigger play areas but I am not sure how this is possible since the cable wouldn't be long enough, unless your PC is inside the play area...
I just bought this one and it comes today: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00YOVKWQS?ref=ppx_pt2_mob_b_prod_image (Rankie)
And I've been using this one with intermittent success:

Definitely hoping to resolve all the hiccups and artifacts though... I've had a feeling it was the adapter giving me some issues I've noticed, but yours is the first dedicated post I've seen address it.
I use this adapter:

I now have a desktop with a DisplayPort, but that adapter worked perfectly with my laptop for the month I used my laptop with my Index.
Edit: I have a Razer Blade 15 with a GTX 1070.
you also supposedly have a mini display port to hdmi adapter since you used it with your macbook air, so this would b cheaper to test it with/use but you would have to use your adapter with it permanently or buy a new one
would something like this work out for him then?

Would I be able to just use the 2 thunderbolt ports from the macbook and get adaptors?

I was eyeing these for example:

Here is what I have to buy after some more digging through Amazon.
25 ft. USB
Bi-directional mini DP to DP adapter
25 ft. DP cable
How is this?
I recommend the Dell u2515h, its a bit below your price range.

This is a professional grade monitor that shows 99% sRGB, and its a 2K panel.
I dont know if your parents are gonna need something of this caliber, but its great value for the price.
Because the monitor comes with a Displayport cable all you need is this adapter

My friend said he uses this one without issue.
Cable Matters Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort Adapter
Just use a mini Displayport to Displayport adapter like this.
The mini-display port on your laptop should work natively at 144Hz.
So you need a monitor that supports this input (DisplayPort that is), and a mini-DP to DP adapter (or cable directly)

Yes, i checked that his works.
But i think on the Monitor there is only a male displayport out, so i'm not sure if the default cord from the mac store would work, unless i am missing one?
I think this is what I want?

I managed to get that cable working. No visual or audio distortion of any kind that I can notice. Instead of that female-to-female displayport adapter you linked I'm using this to connect the cable you linked.
Successful so far, will probably update tomorrow if anything goes wrong as I play more.
Hmmm... I'm thinking I could try this MiniDP to DP (female) adapter: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HNF0KF0/ with the VisionTek adapter you mentioned because the reviews are saying that it can work at 120hz https://www.amazon.com/VisionTek-DisplayPort-DVI-D-Active-Adapter/dp/B00DYRQXMK/
I own an MSI gaming laptop and purchased this for my Index and it works fine.https://www.amazon.com//dp/B00HNF0KF0
I did have to revert to an earlier nVidia driver though as the one I was using (430.86) caused my Index's LCDs to turn off (or display just a black screen) and a warning on my laptop about a HDCP error, making me think it was the adapter.
Oh, I just checked and nVidia released a new driver today (7.9.19)!!!! v431.36 - Gonna install this when I get home from work! Thanks for making me check! haha!
