Also suggest the following, but the ones I have are too old to recommend.

  1. External battery
  2. USB ethernet adapter (if you travel to places that don't have wireless)
  3. SD card

Most of the time, the room will have either:
HDMI
DVI (not as common)
VGA (most common)

If he's on a mac you can buy a display port -> all three
Something like [This](http://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-DisplayPort-Thunderbolt-Compatible/dp/B00ESM3ISM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=
&sr=8-1&keywords=displayport+to+hdmi+dvi+vga+male+to+female+3-in-1+adapter)

it may work on some pc's too.

I started carrying around one of these when I got my Macbook Pro (and also used it with my X1 Carbon later). It really makes you stop worrying. DisplayPort is the best.

I just ordered one that has VGAl, HDMI, and DVI in the same one for $25 from Amazon. link

I keep this is my bag so that I don't have to carry around multiple adapters.

Awww yiss. I bring my Surface Pro onsite for my contracting gigs and people are amazed at how fast it is.

The only 2 adapters I need:

I use this one on my dock Plugable Active Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter (Supports displays up to 4k / UHD / 3840x2160@30Hz) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00S0BWR2K/ref=cm_sw_r_other_awd_HuWGwb1MTAD5F

And I carry this one in my bag: Cable Matters 101020 Mini DisplayPort to HDMI/DVI/VGA Male to Female 3-in-1 Adapter, Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ESM3ISM/ref=cm_sw_r_other_awd_PvWGwbZ806VA3

I have had to restart my machine with the multi adapter but the first one really hasn't given me any problems.

You, sir, are a God among men. THANK YOU!! That worked! I connected an HDMI cable to the back of my monitor and then used this 4-in-1 adapter I just bought to go from HDMI to mini DP. It works with the MS Surface dock too! Best part is that I'm getting a full 2560x1600 resolution. Thank you VERY much!!

PS...The WORST part is I watched this video by the Microsoft team that developed the dock and they SPECIFICALLY state to use a DP to mini DP cable for best performance so that's what I bought and what I used.

I bought the 3-in-1 Mini-DisplayPort to VGA, DVI, and HDMI Adapter for $25 from Amazon. I like to have all the options available.

So, have you ever shopped on Amazon before? It's really neat, they seem to have adapters for just about anything, especially if you've got the money for it. /s

Found this cable which would suffice, I'm sure. Alternatively, you could get this hub for all of the above options.

Seriously, though, I just searched Google/Amazon for "Mini DP to HDMI". In general, if you know what your input and outputs are, you can use straight Google to find whatever adapter you need. Or like, some forum post fr 10 years ago to DIY it.

I purchased this MiniDP to HDMI,DVI,VGA off of Amazon. For the lulz I plugged three things all at once and the SP3 just mirrored to all three (a known limitation of this adapter) and it worked fine.
Seriously though, I use this adapter occasionally to watch shows onto an HDTV. The sound and picture quality are really good, and haven't had any issues with it so far.

Memory will help big time. I would max it out with 16 if it’s possible on a 2009.

I don’t know about the monitors. Drivers are also a problem with Mac. It’s not like Windows where will you find a driver for everything.

You may have luck with an adapter like this though:
