You could maybe try an adapter, I have an iPod nano that wouldn't charge so I bought an adapter, I'm not sure how that would work with the lightning to 30 pin though. Here's a link to the one I bought, maybe it'll set you on the right track.

Hope this helps
Careful with the age of your 30 pin connector device. At some point they switched the power pin so the Bluetooth adaptor might not get power if your device is too old (like my Apple HiFi). Another dongle to the rescue: http://www.amazon.com/CableJive-dockStubz-Converter-Through-Adapter/dp/B003TJR2HS
I have that paired with a Bluetooth adapter like OPs and it was totally worth the $50 total I paid.
My head unit is the stock CD player one
When I bought it, it has this connected behind it:

But the ipod connected was torn to shreds so bought a replacement
Ipod connects fine as mentioned before thinking it is a cd changer, can skip track etc through the steering wheel, which I guess is the added benefit of using that device instead of just an aux cable
The iPod would connect, but not charge, giving the 'not charging' message on the iPod screen, so I got this adapter which now lets it charge when connected:

Will check out the aux only connection on the head unit if the aux level doesn't work for increasing the volume a bit on the iPod though
OK, here is what I use... Amazon Links: https://www.amazon.com/Bluetooth-Adapter-Cooper-iPhone-CoolStream/dp/B017RWJ46O/ref=sr_1_16?keywords=coolstream+bluetooth&qid=1562714825&s=gateway&sr=8-16

You'll need both as the stock iPhone cable does not supply enough power.
