I implore you all to check out a copy of The Calvin and Hobbes Tenth Anniversary Book, wherein Bill Watterson talks about Calvin and Hobbes (and its evolution) in depth. It's fantastic.

>The so-called "gimmick" of my strip - the two versions of Hobbes - is sometimes misunderstood. I don't think of Hobbes as a doll that miraculously comes to life when Calvin's around. Neither do I think of Hobbes as the product of Calvin's imagination. The nature of Hobbes's reality doesn't interest me, and each story goes out of its way to avoid resolving the issue. Calvin sees Hobbes one way, and everyone else sees Hobbes another way. I show two versions of reality, and each makes complete sense to the participant who sees it. I think that's how life works. None of us sees the world in exactly the same way, and I just draw that literally in the strip. Hobbes is more about the subjective nature of reality that about dolls coming to life.

Watterson commented on those decals in the forward from The Calvin and Hobbes Tenth Anniversary Book. From what I can remember, he was very upset over the blatant plagiarism and misuse of his creation. He tied that discussion into a larger one about his publisher trying to do the same thing with C&H as the sticker pushers through mass marketing and highjacking the rights of his work from him.

I recommend the 10th Anniversary Book, because it has author commentary beneath most of the comics that really adds to the experience of reading it now that we're old enough to appreciate getting a real glimpse into the mind of Bill Watterson.

Yeah, C+H hasn't been actually written for years (it's all reruns, as it were). If you want a commentary on his work, I suggest picking up Calvin + Hobbes: Tenth Anniversary Book.

Bill Watterson has done commentary in this book, including on some of the strips in the link. It was wonderful to read his thoughts about the strip.

I loved the tenth anniversary edition, it has a lot of great strips and comments/reflection from Watterson himself.

Awesome! I would suggest buying one of the collection books to see if it sparks her interest. The Tenth Anniversary Book is very affordable and is a great collection.

You were inspired to copy the picture from the cover of the 10th Anniversary Book? It's a nice copy, but I hope you're not trying to pass it off as original work.

While I wouldn't get it initially, the 10th anniversary edition has Bill Watterson commentary throughout the book. It's a fascinating ride where he talks about his personal life, the comic's inspiration, explanations of his running gags and motifs, and other fun and interesting tidbits about the comic. I would highly recommend it once you have some of the other books.

Gotta get the Tenth Anniversary Book. Great commentary by Mr. Watterson.

Just in case some of you have never seen it, he wrote a 10th anniversary book that explains some things.

At least for those who didn't know this, it might hold you over until the next person asks for an AMA with Mr. Watterson.

I wish they could have gotten an interview with Watterson. I know he's famously private, but getting his views would have been great...sigh...well I guess there's always the tenth anniversary book. I really loved reading his commentary.

he talks about this stuff in the 10th anniversary book

He doesn't like it. He says it takes the magic away from comic. He usually cites Hobbes as the biggest issue. In the comic, to Calvin, Hobbes is real, but to everyone else he is a stuffed toy. If they made merchandise ( such as a stuff Hobbes ), it would ruin the magic because he would be either in one form or the other.

Schrödinger's Hobbes ?
