one like this can be mounted straight or at an angle in case the stud in the wall does not line up with the post. Never use a pressure gate for stairs, only hard mounted. We have one like at the top of our stairs and a pressure fit gate to block access to the bottom.

They attach higher to the wall to avoid stuff like that and they let you install at off angles, which can be handy. They are also rock solid.

Get that gate. It screws into the wall so you know it won't fall when the baby is going to town on it, and there isn't a bottom bar to trip on. I got 2 of them and have no complaints.
