More interesting, however, is that he spent time getting to know a lot of carneys in the process of writing the book. His finding was that most of the time, the carneys are running an honest game in hopes of turning a modest profit at the end of the day. They acknowledge that the games can be won, but they'll go broke if everyone was so practiced at them and could win every time.

Also, I can tell you that a 6 foot stuffed animal costs more than you think. Most people write them off as "oh these probably cost like six bucks", but something that big probably costs the carney more like $30, even in bulk.
