I'm working on a similar project to cut down space with my CDs, but I think it could apply to DVDs as well. I've done it in two steps. Initially I got rid of the jewel cases and put my CDs in Case Logic binders. My local waste management company recycles old jewel cases, but I have to take them in and they charge a fee. After about six binders I realized that I don't need those either, so I donated them to Goodwill. I regret buying binders. I am now sleeving my CDs (booklet, CD and tray card) in these. I then store them in Lekman boxes which fit along side my vinyl on Expedit (recently renamed Kallax) shelves.
It's difficult to reconcile a hobby like music (my main collection is vinyl but I also have a lot of CDs & cassettes) with minimalism, but I keep it organized and use the 'one in, one out' rule when acquiring new music.
