Don't worry, it is a common question when dealing with analog chronos. What you have to know is that the actual seconds hand of the watch, the one that keeps track of time, never stops or resets and is not part of the chrono function in any way.

I was going to write a long explanation but you will quickly get the idea with a video. Some watches count seconds, minutes and fractions of a second (which is cool but not very useful), others count hours. There is a lot of variation so you will have to check specific models. Some go up to 30 minutes only yet others designed for specific sports count the length of a regular match, like some soccer or basketball chronos count up to 45 minutes.

Some models do not have a timekeeping seconds hand in order to keep things simple. Others can get very complicated (incidentally I thing the last one is one of the few chronos with a big central seconds hand used for timekeeping rather than the chrono function).

Now, a few things to consider if you plan on using the chrono a lot:

  • They are harder to read than digital chronos. I can easily read my digitals when biking or running without stopping, but reading a tiny hand in a small subdial is much harder when you are moving

  • The hands on the subdials will get misaligned. Most chronos offer a way to calibrate them

  • Digital chronos can go up to 99 hours

  • Some chronos use a subdial to display current time in a 24 hr format. Personally I have no use for that. Look closely at this model and see how it is indicating approx 10, which is the same time as the big hands. For contrast check this, looks like the same watch but the upper subdial indicates fractions of a second.

An analog chrono I like is the Csio AMW330, it features a solid steel case and counts up to 12 hours (see the left subdial). I think it looks fantastic with a white dial but there is also black and gold; you can get a metal bracelet if you prefer. Unfortunately it is bigger than you want, at 45 mm.

I own an AMW700 which is 38mm, made of steel and has many functions. It has a 24hr chrono, countdown time of several hours and moon phase, plus other fishing functions I don't use but don't get in the way. My only complaints are that the light is not very effective and the band has parts of vinyl that are not high quality, but otherwise it should last many years, mine is 5 years old. I'd say those are your best options at this price range.

Another one I own is very similar to this. It features a thermometer and dual 99 hr chronos but it's harder to use and see due to the inverted screen (white numbers on black background. On the other hand, it looks incredibly futuristic when you use the backlight.

A popular ana digi is the AQ-S810 which features solar power, but the chrono is 59 minutes only. There is a very similar model with a metal bracelet but the case is plastic and only the tiny screen is backlit.

Swatch offers analog chronos at this price, they are all plastic and in shiny colors, more like toys.

If you want my personal opinion, on your budget the best option is to go digita with a g shock like this. Solar power, syncs time with an atomic clock, 99 hour chrono, 24 hr countdown timer (if I am not mistaken), a good backlight, very though.
