I have a G-Shock that I bought from Amazon. It's all black, has digital and standard watch face, and charges itself in the light. It has survived 3 years working as both a medic and ED tech in two very busy systems. It has a few scratches, but for the most part, no problems whatsoever. Link below:

GWM 5610: If you're okay with digital, it's hard to beat one of these for indestructibility.

GSTS100D: If what you want is analogue, this one is also indestructible.

AWGM100B: Basically the same guts as the last one, but the case is covered in rubber so you don't have to worry about scratching things while you work.

All three of these run off of little solar cells and set themselves automatically from a signal broadcast throughout pretty much all of the Continental US, Europe, Eastern China, and Japan. So all you ever have to set is the time zone and it works the rest out for you. If you really want you can go and buy a crazy expensive G-Shock, but really the only improvement after the $350 region is in the $1000 region when they add GPS so you don't even have to do the time zone manually.

Edit: Got my facts mixed up some; the second one does not have radio-controlled time like the others.

And as long as I'm adding things, I'll add another recommendation: Bertucci makes really durable field watches. Nothing too fancy; just quartz movements in really well-built and tough cases.

casio g shock! you can get ones that are solar powered and sync to the atomic clock so they never need to be set and never need batteries. I've had my protrek 2500 for the better part of a decade and have beat the crap out of it and it still works just fine.

Edit : they also have many models within your price range, example : https://www.amazon.com/Casio-AWGM100B-1ACR-G-Shock-Solar-Watch/dp/B00791YUPO/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=casio+solar+g+shock&qid=1568306132&s=gateway&sr=8-4

My weekend watch is this G-shock. It's definitely sporty, solar powered (with a huge reserve) and sets itself to USNO atomic clock every night. Zero maintenance, zero worries, bulletproof.

I'd like to get a watch that's both (1) Solar & (2) Atomic.

I've been thinking of this, but I hear it's difficult to read. Other thoughts?

Full disclosure - I am not military, just an outdoors enthusiast. Your requirements may vary.

I have had the AWGM100B-1ACR for four years now and it has been basically indestructible. The Tough Solar works well, it never gets below "medium" on the battery indicator. I like analog hands since you can use them as a rough improvised compass. This watch isn't giant like most of the G-Shock line, so I find it to look much nicer than many of the G-Shocks you see, as well as being more comfortable to wear. It can't really track or log your runs as it's a pretty basic watch, but it does have stopwatch/split timer functionality so it's not totally useless for that. The downside for your requirements would be the backlight - I don't think it's really that bright, but the hands are luminous without the backlight although they need to charge during the day as they aren't tritium. They last a fair amount of time on a charge though. Personally I keep the backlight turned off. I don't like the auto-on functionality and it is a big drain on the battery. The atomic time sync is nice as it keeps the time correct without having to mess around with setting it.

Questions let me know. Good luck!

If you'd like something different from the square G-Shocks, I'd recommend the AWGM100 models. They've got a pretty understated aesthetic (for a G-Shock, anyway), and they're also one of the smaller models in terms of dial size. I bought an AWGM100B-1ACR a couple of weeks ago, and it's gotten a lot more time on my wrist than I originally thought it would.

I’ve worn this one for about 2 years now. Casio Men's AWGM100B-1ACR "G-Shock" Solar Watch https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00791YUPO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_UwZbAbHBV8PBQ

I had the same thought when I first saw it! It's the AWGM100B-1ACR. I picked up the bull bars from ebay. I hope that helps!

Im trying to convince myself I don't need a g-shock and Its really tough (pun intended). I run, weight lift, swim, and sleep while wearing my pathfinder. Im so used to always having a watch on my wrist that I feel like any other slightly more delicate watch would break. My pathfinder has been through hell and back; Ive swam in the ocean, rock climbed, taken it to about 30ft deep in saltwater, and even chemically melted it in a lab (oops). I use it to time my runs, but I can use my cell phone for that. So in reality the most I need is a tough as nails analog watch, and one that doesn't make me look dorky to wear. I don't like the idea of another "disposable" watch, I'd like my next one to last at least 5 years and this one has come close but the batteries are limiting that. If tough solar can last 5 years then I would buy one in a heartbeat. [Probably this one] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00791YUPO/ref=s9_simh_gw_p241_d0_i1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=1BD7PP7ZZZ95K368RYJX&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=1630083502&pf_rd_i=507846)

Here it is for much, much cheaper.

u/highandtightgshock · 1 pointr/Watches

Nice. Those are great models.

My current rotation includes the GR-8900-1, AWGM-100-B, G-9300 Mudman, and my daily driver is a DW-6600.

For sporty I really like this G-Shock. Solar with atomic time. And a little smaller than your avg G-Shock.

For a fashion watch, I think Nixon makes a good watch and there are so many.

Also, you can look at Long Island Watch Co at an Orient Bambino. Great automatic that'll last for many many years

analog gshock

Analog, solar powered, atomic and the normal gshock standards.

The little lcd screens are impossible to use without an external light at night and are too small to make it a primary stopwatch. The backlight just shines and LED on the watch hands (which isn’t even needed since they have a slight glow).

I just use it for telling time while working/traveling/outdoors and enjoy never needing to set or charge it. Plus it’s analog and all black so it isn’t quite the eyesore that other gshocks are.

I’m also a big fan of the bin laden watch . Super light weight; durable, cheap and doesn’t get caught on things. It was my go to for medical stuff.

Thanks for the replies! I have a g shock that is much too large. Deciding between this and " Casio Men's AWGM100B-1ACR "G-Shock" Solar Watch https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00791YUPO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_0p4OzbVF4DKTY "

Ok, bear with me here...

Seiko

Seiko SNE050 - Probably looks the closest to the Nixon. It's solar powered too. $94

Seiko SNK809 - Automatic, so keep that in mind. $70

SUP873 - A little dressier. $83

Citizen There are a lot of Citizens, I've just listed a few.

Axiom - Minimalist. Very minimalist. $115

Drive - $90

Drive - Motorsports inspired. $95

Casio

MDV106 - Classic Diver look. Stick it on a Bond Nato strap for extra points. $45

G-Shock GWM5610-1 - Not minimalist, but it has a retro style with new technology. $100

G-Shock AWGM100B-1ACR - More minimalist, for a G-Shock anyways. Just to have options. $100

Orient

Capital or Capital 2 - Dressier. $100

Messerschmitt

ME-99S - Aviator style. $130

ME262S - Aviator. $130

ME-42S - Flieger style. $130

If you can stretch the $130-$150, then I would highly recommend the Tissot Everytime. It has a very popular minimalist look, scratch resistant sapphire crystal glass, and a Swiss quartz movement. And again, if the Nixon is what you want, then by all means get the Nixon.

EDIT Forgot to mention Vostok Amphibia. They are a Russian Diver watch. Built like a tank, and there are endless different dial/bezel combinations. Check Ebay maybe. They can often be found for about $70

u/dave_two_point_oh · 1 pointr/gshock

Hmm. It might actually be the same one you've already found (https://smile.amazon.com/Casio-AWGM100B-1ACR-G-Shock-Solar-Watch/dp/B00791YUPO).

The dial is actually kind of a deep charcoal grey color. Different lighting will make it seem either blacker or more of a dark silvery color depending on amount/type of lighting and viewing angle.

The pic I posted was taken while sitting under a bunch of fluorescent tubes in a library.

I have this atomic G-Shock..

I haven't worn it much lately, but it is an absolute joy to wear when traveling.

u/JaggedOne · 1 pointr/gshock

The AWGM100B-1ACR doesn't start with GW, and it is solar and atomic.
