No information included about your desired price range so I'll just throw out a few suggestions. G-Shock is a solid choice - my favorite is the GW6900 as it is 5 buttons (dedicated light button), solar powered, and sets itself every night to the atomic clock. A slimmer option is the GWM-5610 with the same features except for the dedicated light button. These also have non-atomic non-solar versions for about half the price DW6900 and DW5600 which both come in around $45. These are classic models and won't draw unwanted attention.

If you're looking for something analog, while I hate to recommend another Casio, the MDV-106 dive watch is really hard to beat for 40-50 bucks. Water resistant to 200 meters, real functioning diver's timing bezel, applied indices, rubber strap... it's highly regarded at this price point. Good luck!

I'd get him a G-Shock. $45 and built like a tank.

Casio G-Shock DW6900-1V

Price: $80 MSRP, $50 on Amazon.

Movement: Quartz

Style: Sports digital

Size: 53.2 x 50.0 x 16.3mm (via Casio's site)

Link: Amazon, Casio

Description: Like all G-Shocks the DW6900 is extremely durable, very accurate, and highly readable with a great indigo backlight. This watch features an alarm, countdown timer, 1/100 second Chronograph with split/lap function, and a perpetual calendar preprogrammed through the year 2039. The watch is also waterproof up to 200 meters. Though there are a huge number of similar models, all DW6900-series watches are identical in terms of form factor and movement, the only difference being the wide variety of colors you can find them in.

G-Shock 100%. There are a couple military ones with blacked out reverse dials, however they can be more difficult to see in certain light conditions than the normal dials. Here are a few models that military personnel use and some others:

GD-120

DW6900BB-1

DW6900-1V: This one is similar to a very popular G-shock used by a lot of US military, the DW-6600. I don't think they make it anymore though, but this is pretty close.

GW6900-1

GD100-1BCR

GD-120CM

GD-400

GD350-1B: This one has a yellowish tint to the digits so it's one of the easier reverse dials to read.

Mudman

Rangeman

DW5600MS-1CR: For this one there is a really cool mod you can do for about $35 more to make it look really tactial and military.

Edit Added some stuff

Sorry, just got home.

-Leather Wallet

-Moleskine Notebook*

-Pencil and Pen

-Casio G-Shock Watch

-Nite-Ize Key Organizer

-Knife made by LumaForce

-Key chain: PNY 16GB Flash Drive, Duct Tape Cylinder, Swiss Army Classic Pocket Knife, Keychain Light

I usually carry all this on my person and have a full sized light and first-aid kit in my pack.

If you want different design check the DW9052 or the DW6900

If you want something a little cooler looking the GA100 is abiut 50% more than the ones already mentioned..

hate to sidetrack your thread, but have you considered these? a daily driver for a carpenter, first thing that comes to mind is a g-shock. indestructible, holds perfect time, and features you could use. I listed a few others for you. Personally. I would get one of these 3, and wear a 007 after work/weekends. IMO, wear and tear is only cool on vintage watches. I agree, 007 is a super sturdy watch, but i'd be a little funny shaking it that much during hard work. Cheers! :D

DW6900. Or, if you're more into the square look, DW5600. Both less than $50 and conservative in style. You can then use the other $450 in your budget for something nice on the weekends or as a reward to yourself for getting that commission in four years. Good luck with your studies and future career.

I can't speak for the ana-digital watches but if you want something that is a must have for g-shock enthusiasts and won't cost a lot to replace get a 6900
Lots of military wear that model as well.

u/pvdnh · 2 pointsr/Watches

Fwiw I work out in my 6900 and it's small and light and doesn't get in the way.

The 5600 is even smaller.

Both come in solar/atomic which is awesome:
GW6900 which is what I have

GW5610

The Casio F-91W was the top recommendation the last time this question was posted, it can be had for $10 on ebay. I use the AE1200, which is a mildly cooler version that is also cheap and works well.

I also have a G-Shock DW6900, which is a great watch, but it's big and digs into the back of your hand when doing pushups if you wear your watch below your ulna. Some guys in my unit have the rangeman, which is cool but pricey; I've yet to hear back about the reliability of its compass for land nav. I've also seen this behemoth out in the wild, which would be cool if it weren't obscenely large (not "big for guys with 6" wrists" large, just plain large) and had the same features as every Garmin and Suunto.

I like the Garmins and Suuntos from a training perspective (for tracking runs and hikes, etc.), but most of the Suunto models don't seem to have seconds readouts, which I think is pretty critical for a military application. The Garmins are pretty good and there's a store where you can download different watch faces to suit your needs. It's a shame smartwatches are so often overpriced, because there's a ton of untapped functionality there.

Whatever you do, get a digital readout, preferably a 24 hour one. Don't be the guy with an analog watch; I understand the aesthetic appeal and normally wear one all the time, so I can tell the time pretty quickly on them, but it's so much easier to use digital at night or on course.

Wore it through basic, and now the field. Solid minimal watch that works.

I would recommend a G-shock, maybe the classic DW-6900 or a GA-100

u/seksninja · 1 pointr/malefashionadvice

2 Timex Weekenders or 1 Seiko 5 OR Citizen Eco-Drive Canvas Strap OR something else entirely? My only watch is a G-Shock.

u/gleam · 1 pointr/Watches

More seriously, if I were looking for a gshock I'd probably be leaning towards this one. Solar, atomic, chrono, WR 200. A touch over your budget, but not much.

A cheaper alternative, not solar, not atomic, and not as good looking, but still WR 200 would be a DW6900.

u/HungreeHippo · 1 pointr/Watches

Or, instead of trying to get them something 'fancy' for $50, go with something actually useful like a G-Shock. If your buddies workout or do things outdoors, they'd def use it.

u/BillBraasky · 1 pointr/Watches

The classic G-Shock is great when you're doing things that you probably don't want to be wearing an expensive watch for anyway.
