This is probably going to be buried, but as a biologist I have to say the alarming loss of biodiversity. Even things like bats, which can live in human structures and eat plentiful insects, are dying off at alarming rates. Bats are worth guano-tons of money to the US and very few people seem to care. It's almost as bad as the current amphibian die-off.

Edit: I can't recommend this book, Last Chance To See by Douglas Adams, highly enough. It's a bit over the 25 year window of this question, but they did a television series starring Stephen Fry a few years ago that is great.

Pft, is that all? What about the Camera watch, calculator watch, or the remote control watch? Casio has gone quite mad with things to put into a watch.

> sheer amount of non-gimmick features

I'm not saying it's not useful for many, but a TV remote IR blaster has been the epitome of a gimmick ever since it was integrated into Casio wrist watches in the 90s.

Edit: lol, people: this was half joke, half opinion. Did no one have that one classmate in school with the Casio tv remote?
