Emile Perreau-Saussine has a good discussion on how one of the big societal changes wrought by the Revolution was a change from a corporate organization of society to an individual one. The former means that the governing forces only interact with the individual through mediating organizations: family, church, aristocracy, etc..

Democracy could tolerate none of this; it's entire philosophical foundation insists that there be nothing between it and the individual. Taken to its natural and eventual end you get the USSR where all organizations other than the state were basically banned, so all that is allowed to exist is the weak and lonely individual and the all-powerful state.

Family is not only the best moral building block of society, it is the way humans naturally organize themselves when allowed to. To organize on other principles - like the democratic one - is disordered.
