HA! I'm currently in the doghouse for buying myself one of these at Christmastime.
Apparently the lady had commissioned a custom wood cutting board and was none too pleased when she came home and saw me about to oil it. I was very impressed at the quality for the price, but alas it's going back to Amazon for the sake of my relationship.
End grain is the way to go. I've thought about taking a round of tree, cutting to size and sanding/filling. Never actually made it happen, my biggest saw is not as big as the board I would want to make. Not sure why such construction isn't more popular, I worry it's because a single piece if more likely to develop large cracks...But I don't really know. Certainly see plenty of trees cut down on the side of the road that would work.
I've had these two blocks for 5+ years without issue. I do oil them and avoid letting them stay wet for extended periods.

What oil/wax do you use?
If you have any discount department stores nearby like Ross or TJ Maxx go check out their kitchen sections. I just got this Catskill Craftsman end grain maple board for $30 bucks! It came with wooden feet that made it wobbly, but I took those off and will fill the holes with wax or wood filler. Other than a slight cosmetic imperfection to one of the boards it's very nice looking and great to chop on! Still a great deal at amazon's asking price and they have lots of sizes to choose from.
