Not entirely sure but I think i've heard her mention the Celestron NexStar 130 SLT before, which costs $400. I'm looking to get something similar, I will have about $500 saved up by june and then i'll do some more research to what type of equipment would be best to observe the moon and anywhere in between while I can hookup my camera to it.
Edit: I just checked, this appearantly was filmed with a standard camera, probably a good dslr with a nice zoom lens!

Why no dobsonian? What's the reason for your decision? What requirements do you have? :-)
The Polaris 130eq, Astromaster 130eq and Spaceprobe 130st aren't bad, but the mount is not great for the telescope. Instability will make focusing and tracking a bit frustrating. The next better EQ mount costs as much as the set (cg4/neq3/astroview - 250-300 bucks).
The Celestron 22152 Omni XLT AZ 130mm is supposedly a more sturdy solution, but has an AltAz type mount, not equatorial. A 2" focuser is great or ultra-wide-field! IF you want to spend the money on a 2" eyepiece for a ~$200 telescope :-)
The computerized Celestron Nexstar SLT mount with 4-5" telescope, possibly refurbished/used, would be within your price range -> Amazon Warehouse used/very good ~297usd. The telescope is similar to the 130st, the GoTo mount a nice gadget- but won't necessarily make everything easier (plus it can't be moved when the batteries are depleted/the power supply isn't handy).
The 4" Mak /u/MtnMaiden suggested is also nice, but the smaller aperture will show less (that's already a 40% smaller surface area or so than a 5" aperture). On a camera tripod it can make a great travel telescope though (that's what I use my 4" Maksutov for).
A table-top dobsonian such as the AWB Onesky, z130 or Lightbridge Mini 130 is more rigid and cheaper; On something like the $15 Ikea Bekväm it's also high enough to comfortably observe while seated. A larger 6-8" dobsonian (from $300, $355) doesn't need a table and they will show significantly more in any regard. Also, the aperture ratio of the 130/650mm -> F/5 telescopes has some issues regarding coma, contrast.

Please specify your requirements and why you decided against a dobsonain :-) Especially in this price range they are more sturdy, perform better and you can afford a larger aperture.

You can see all the planets, and even the Galilean moons clearly, and the shots of the moon are awesome. Good for the Great Orion Nebulae as wel.

I'd mainly be interested in Jupiter and Saturn and would be willing to go up to the $599 cost of the NexStar but would rather just get a cheaper one if there isn't much difference.

I started with this one. A celestron 130slt. I know people don’t like the computerized ones but in my opinion, for an amateur, it’s really great. Amazon has a warehouse deal for $320 right now. It’s a great telescope for beginners. I even took some pictures of the moon and stars. You can see the rings separated from Saturn but you cannot tell that there are two rings if that makes sense.

This would be my first scope and I do want to use it for some astrophotography including planets, the moon, milky way and some more visible M objects. Will this meet my needs or am I out to lunch on thinking this?

I am Irish, so would be buying from either Amazon UK or one of the Euro sites.
The old telescopes I had were the kids style refactors, I dont have expectations of the telescope tracking to object being spot on, but anywhere in the ball park is fine, I can use charts for the rest.
I live in a pretty dark area and holiday in the International Dark Reserve so lucky with the lack of light pollution.
As for what I expect to see, Planets with some detail ? making out Saturn's rings or Jupiter's moons would be great of course. Some deep field objects.
