I used chalk on my chalkboard for a while but it looked a bit grungy (like yours) and the chalk was a PITA to work with on top of not being very sharp.
I have these chalk markers now and absolutely love them. There is no comparison and I will not go back to chalk.

You could try chalk pens. I used to use them in college to makeshift windows into whiteboards, so I know they work on glass well and are easy to wipe off (just need a wet towel).

I think it depends a lot on how how you write on it. To that end, I would consider using chalkboard markers, like they do for restaurant menus, rather than chalk, which can look faint and messy on non-slate chalkboard surfaces.
