Something you could try is working your way through the book Character Mentor by Tom Bancroft.

What I like about this book is that it teaches you about fundamentals of character design while giving you assignments for creating a world for those characters, as though you were to use them in a comic or animation project.
Tom Bancroft books are a good place to start: http://www.amazon.com/Character-Mentor-Example-Expressions-Characters/dp/0240820711 http://www.amazon.com/dp/0823023494/ref=cm_sw_r_tw_dp_WQdTub1XMGW3X
10/10 Recommend getting Creating Characters with Personality and Character Mentor. To be fair, I’m biased because my professor wrote them, but they’re great references and Tom is the best.
Use your own face as a starting point. Make emotions, snap a picture. Study real life. I'd also recommend the book Character Mentor by Tom Bancroft. It's awesome. :D
