I was looking into buying these boots. I was wondering what your opinion is on them? Also what general things they would look good with.
I often suggest the lugged outsole version (opposed to the flat outsole) of the Chippewa Apache with snoseal as a good midwestern winter boot option (Ohio). I trekked mostly on unshoveled sidewalks (snow/ice mix) to and from class (about a mile each way) and did just fine all winter. The max I walked through was maybe 6 inches of snow.
I am a 13 and went a full size down to 12 and they broke in marvelously.

You're not going to get anything worthwhile under $90. Save up and get a quality boot that will last more than one winter.
As functional and weatherproof as you can probably get: Bean Boot 8" Thinsulate $139
A functional boot with enough grip to handle the winter: Chippewa Apache Boot $189.99
Really great crossover between form and function: Red Wing Beckman $340
I'm in the same boat as you. Been to a lot of stores in my area (Oslo), but haven't found any shoes I really like, except these. I already have store credit(?) at a place that has them, so I think I'm gonna throw in a little more cash and get them. If I didn't have that store credit I would probably go for something like this. Soles with a good grip are pretty important in our part of the world :)
Would these be better for ice? While my uni does a decent job with snow, I'd still prefer to have the best chance to stay standing as possible.
I see a lot of people saying these boots are bad in the snow and ice... Are the soles different than these Chippewa Apache Lace Up boots? I was trying to figure out the difference for the price, and looking at the soles this seems to be it.
For the record, I live in PA and winters can get pretty rough. I don't feel like falling on my ass walking to work every morning.
