Specifically, something not made with a leather sole and probably not made from calfskin/kidskin (goat equivalent to calfskin).

For light snow you'll probably want a lug sole. Something like this, for example, isn't that much chunkier. You can buy dressier boots with synthetic lug soles like the Allen Edmonds Long Branch (which is available in grey, or used to be), or something like the Red Wings Beckman which has a leather sole with lugged plate, but I think something more like the Chippewa is a safer bet if you're looking for something to specifically wear in light snow.

edit: However, what I linked you wasn't black I just realized.

If black is a necessity, the RW Iron Ranger and Red Wing Beckman both come in black, however the vibram sole on the red wing isn't ideal for snow/ice, and the calfskin on the beckman can discolor and be stained by snow/salt fairly easily, as well as the rest of the sole is still leather. If it's really worth the money, you could buy the Iron Rangers and take it to a cobbler and get a lugged sole but you'd be beyond your budget at that point.

I would like to but these Chippewa Apache Lace-Up Boots (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004TK2UCI?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=ox_sc_act_title_1&smid=A2WOPAGVJGO3RL) but I'm a student and the $150 price tag is a little high for me. Does anyone know of somewhere selling them for a better price or an Amazon promo code code that I could use? Are these boots worth the cost?

Damn, just bought these for $143 less the 25% BOOTSFAM code a few days ago (with the vibram soles)... $112 less 20% is a much better deal! Too bad, it's a different product code at Amazon otherwise I may be able to get some money back.

You can get the lug sole version of the Chippewas. Looks a bit more clunky, but it is much more functional. With the 20% off coupon, it comes to about $118.

Great post, but quick question. For the Chippewa's, how does the pair in the original post compare with these slightly more expensive ones?. Is it just color?

EDIT: Lug sole apparently, never mind! I'll probably go with those because of the snow and slush.

the oft-recommended Chippewa Apache is only about $150 on amazon. The Thorogood Moc-Toe is also about that price.
