They already bet you to it. Nintendo released the 3DS Circle Pad Pro.

L targeting is all you really need in most situations and its faster than panning the camera to the monster anyways. The c stick can be used for more fine adjustments but I hardly use mine in most fights. However there is an option to buy a Circle pad pro extension that you can use to control the camera. I used one for MH3U before I got my new 3ds and it works great!

Silicone Comfort Grip for O3DS, HORI Adjustible Grip.

The Silicone will be a bit iffy as there's usually a lot of complaints of it sliding around, as well as blocking all of your ports like Game Card and Stylus, so YMMV. The HORI looks odd and yet interesting, I don't know how comfy it is.

I'm USA, but I did this searching off of Amazon UK. I wouldn't recommend those Power Grips you see everywhere since there's no telling when the batteries crap out.

As a side note: If you want extra functionality in a grip, there's also the Original Circle Pad Pro for the O3DS. A little more expensive and a bit bulky on the right side, but it gives you the extra functions on a New 3DS unit with a second full Circle Pad (instead of the rubber nub on N3DS(XL) systems, and ZL ZR shoulder buttons. You'd still be limited to standard 3DS titles and not New 3DS Only titles, obviously, but you'd have the extra functions in games like Monster Hunter, Smash Bros, and more.

It runs fine on the old 3ds. I have 300+ hours clocked on my old 3ds and have never had any issues really.

Sometimes the fps will drop when playing online, but its nothing too bad. The game is definately playable. One thing i would really suggest is picking up a Circle Pad Pro because the camera control can be a little bit sketchy without one.

It has a very useful lock-on feature that helps with camera control, but if you stick with the game and reach the endgame stuff, you're definately gonna want that extra control. It might also be worth DL'ing the demo from the nintendo shop if its still available. It showcases one of the easier hunts in the game, and a more difficult one.

If you do pick it up, come join us at /r/monsterhunter , everyone is super helpful to new players.

While I'd love to have it on the Wii U instead, remember you can use a circle pad pro to give the 3DS dual analogs.

Main downside for me is that it's much harder to see what's happening on the smaller screen. Just got a Wii u a couple weeks ago, and I've improved so much just by having a bigger screen. Will end up with 4U regardless though

The internets also inform me that to get full enjoyment out of monster hunter and stuff like resident evil revelations, you'll want to buy a circle pad pro aswell. http://www.amazon.co.uk/pc-video-games/dp/B006J66CPG that is said cpp

If you get Tri, be sure to have a wii pro controller. Otherwise you're stuck with awkward wiimote+nunchuk controls.

Also, keep in mind that Tri no longer has online functionality. The only multiplayer for it is the monster arena hunts which are designed to be more challenging than a normal hunt of the same monster. Unfortunately as well, half the game's content (High Rank) was entirely behind the multiplayer mode.

4 Ultimate has one of the better tutorials, plus you could do coop if you grabbed another copy+3ds. But the handheld versions can be awkward to use as well. Consider getting a circle pad pro if you don't have the terribly named "new" 3ds. Otherwise camera control is on the same thumb as character movement.

good news, you don't have to...

One solution is to buy one of the Nintendo circle pad pro. They come with the extra buttons and might be cheaper than a repair of your 3ds.

circle pad pro. its perfect for games like metal gear solid and splinter cell, and a must for monster hunter. it looks a little wonky since it actually doesn't hold the 3ds in the middle, but i promise that while it looks like its something that will bother the shit out of you, you stop noticing it the second you start playing something. it isnt heavy, and it adds a little more bulk to the system so you can hold onto it a little better.

I would recommend investing in a circle pad pro. These cannot be used with the N3DS though just fyi.

Here is one for a normal-sized 3DS - Here (no referral link)

I loved being able to use the zl and zr to move the camera.

For N3DS I just got used to the nipple.
