I was just discussing this with someone the other day, and they shared this helpful message that was sent out to families by their UU church before the climate strikes a few weeks ago (scroll down to the "Taking Action in the World" green box). In particular, I thought this section was great:

>Many kids, especially older children, will already have heard about the climate emergency we are facing and may be afraid about the future. It is important not to dismiss those fears - your kids need to know that you share those concerns, but they also need to see your resilience. It can be hard to feel like we are being honest if we tell kids "everything will be ok." So what reassurance can we offer? We can remind our kids that they are part of a family and a community that loves and supports them, and will help each other as we face the climate emergency together. Connecting with our communities and building strength together is our best hope of mitigating and surviving climate emergency.

>We can also empower our kids by modelling taking action around climate emergency: we can be part of the small-scale change by altering our habits as a family, and also demanding systemic change from our governments. Kids can make art or write letters to your elected representatives demanding action on the climate emergency.

There's also this fantastic PDF guide to talking about climate change with kids, and some good books that paint a realistic but hopeful picture such as The Magic School Bus and the Climate Challenge and Climate Change: Discover How It Impacts Spaceship Earth. He might also be inspired by Greta Thunberg, the Swedish teenager who started the youth-led climate strikes; there have been a few books published about her in the last few months, such as Greta's Story: The Schoolgirl Who Went On Strike To Save The Planet. I think showing him that he's not alone in his concerns, and that there are thousands, millions of other kids and adults out there who are working to solve these issues - and that he can be a part of that change as well - may help him feel more empowered and hopeful about the future.
