Okay, so I am pretty sure you are just me writing from the past, because I have had the exact same problem... BUT luckily for you, I have determined a series of solutions!

  • First, go to bed on time. It doesn't seem like it would make that much of a difference, but it really does. (You might want to try the website sleepyti.me for determining the exact time to wake up/fall asleep. I haven't seen astounding differences like some will tout, but I do notice some kind of difference.)

  • Secondly, there are a couple alarm clocks I could recommend:

    1.) The Alarmy app
    is one that requires you to get up and take a picture of something in your house/apartment in order to disable the alarm. It is super helpful to me but it does have the tendency to be a bit buggy sometimes (and not got off), so be forewarned...

    2.) I have a Clocky alarm as well and it is also pretty effective. It is one of those alarms that rolls off your nightstand and hides. And it certainly does make the most God-awful, absolutely un-ignorable sound in the world, so there's no danger of sleeping through that.


    So that's my collection of knowledge at the moment. Hopefully it helps!

Set your alarm/phone to full volume and set it all across your room on the other side (or at least a good distance away) so you can still hear it but you have to get up to turn it off.

Clocky. It has wheels. When the alarm goes off, it sounds like a bunch of random beeping.

If you hit the snooze button, the next time it goes off, it will not only make a bunch of noise, but roll off your nightstand and go all over the room room until it gets stuck somewhere, still making noise.

That's what I meant, yes. The idea behind a commitment device is that you are actually two selves, the planner and the doer. The planner may have high hopes, but the doer's the one who has to execute the plan. The problem is that the planner has no good way to enforce the plans, s/he just hopes that the doer will execute because there is a plan. (Seinfeld actually had a great description of this!)

Enter the commitment device. It's the way that the planner ensures his plan is followed through on. The commitment device removes options from the doer so that the doer is much more likely to execute the plan. If you put the groceries budget on a prepaid card that can't be spent anywhere else, you ensure that it can't be flexed out. That is, the planner knows that the doer will be tempted to flex the grocery budget to use for lunches. So the planner sets up a situation where the doer can't flex it. One fun example is Clocky, the clock that runs away from you when it goes off. The planner sets the alarm, and when it goes off, the doer has 3 choices: let the alarm ring, get up, or hit the snooze button. Knowing that the doer will be tempted to hit the snooze button, the planner removes the snooze option by purchasing Clocky. Now the doer must choose between getting up or letting the alarm clock ring while driving around the bedroom. (In the past, I solved this a slightly different way. I had a thing of caffeinated water next to my bed, and I'd drink that, then hit the snooze button. I normally didn't get to hear the second alarm because either the caffeine woke me up or nature calling would.)

More over, I use a sleep tracker. It walked me up when I should naturally wake-up easier. Not sure which phone you use, but both Android and Apple have apps that work well. Related Lifehacker review of sleep trackers.

i set 2 alarms. my phone goes off and i always hit snooze. like you i sometimes do it in my sleep. 9 minutes later it goes off again. if i hit snooze again, then a minute later, my alarm clock goes off. its really loud and i have to get up to turn it off. it really helps to have to get up to turn off the alarm because you definitely have to wake up. you could put the alarm clock all the way across the room and just crank up the volume.

also, some people actually sleep in their workout clothes to help them get moving.

Maybe this guy can help. Also make sure your diet is well and you're drinking enough water. Are you getting enough sleep? Too much sleep? You could also see a sleep specialist to check for things like apnea which will decrease the hours of sleep you get per night, making it difficult to wake up.

I've destroyed (unintentionally) more than 10 alarm clocks throughout HS to college.

A coworker gave me a clock with wheels on it, it was a gag gift but it worked:

I would personally recommend just going to bed early. Making a set bed time will help your body establish a sleep schedule.

I’m sorry this happened. It’s a too frequent occurrence with me too.

I’m getting better at this, but before it got so bad that I accidentally trained my girlfriend to silence alarms while sleeping. Just because I would set so many and never wake up, she would turn them off for me but it got to the point where she wouldn’t wake up to them anymore, knowing I would just turn them off and go back to sleep. And choose sleep over chores i needed to do around the house. (I work evenings so I don’t have this problem)

Here’s some things that helped me the last few months

  1. Don’t give yourself room to doubt. Vision yourself waking up to the alarm, when you’re setting your alarm write it down in person and a note in your phone that you WILL wake up to the alarm.

    If that doesn’t work...

  2. There are alarm apps you can get that require you to solve problems in order to turn off the alarm

    If that doesn’t work...

    Ask a friend to call or text you until you get up. Make sure if it’s a text, you call them once your up so they know you are conscious.

    If that doesn’t work...

    Our minds are trained in a funny way. If you ever realize your mind going into auto pilot while driving a familiar route and not remembering part of the drive (how many red lights you could have driven through). Or even just how time goes by faster every year. Our minds reduce the interpreting work load if it is familiar with it. That being said, this can also happen with alarms. Setting the same alarm noise at the same time every day, your brain anticipates it, going into autopilot, it’ll turn the alarm off without even properly waking you up.
    -set different alarm tones. Choose ones that really annoy you/don’t care about.
    -set alarms at different times everyday
    -when you go to set an alarm. Set it to around the time you want but don’t actually look at the last number, so your brain doesn’t subconsciously know when the alarm is going off.

    Ok! So!

    With all these tips - the BEST thing you can do if any of these work, is to make sure you get into the habit of waking up to them. If it works for 4 days, change it up, make a goal for the next 4, then change it etc until your brain will no longer just silence alarms as it did before.

    there will still be days where you sleep through the alarms. But it won’t be nearly as many
