Arranging our space:

Over the past year and a half of living here, we've observed our general habits and made modifications based on that. In our earlier iterations, we had the wooden/white bookshelf on the living room back wall, plus some other pieces that weren't really being used - like the record player (only used sometimes), and a tiny desk that no longer fit me. Looking back at the pics, to me it looked awkward actually, like the pieces didn't really work together well in that configuration.

So over time we realized we needed to better use that back wall because it was the longest wall in the apartment and prime real estate. I now work at home much more for my job, and she also values having a work space, so we decided to utilize that whole back wall as our "office" area. Seemed logical. Over time we also noticed that it was becoming annoying always having to eat our food on our laps. For some dishes it was fine but other intricate dishes should really be eaten at a table. So that was why we recently decided to overhaul the dining room nook area. We decided that since the wooden/white bookshelf was more of a 'decorative' piece to us (holds books but does nothing else in terms of functionality), we could move it to be in the dining nook, as more of a background piece, rather than the first piece you see when you walk into the place.

In terms of the bedroom, it became painfully obvious our original arrangement was not going to cut it once we bought a second tv :P We originally had the tv sitting on the two new wooden dressers underneath the window, in this configuration. We very quickly got sick of always having to be turned to watch tv so we finally measured and confirmed that we could actually have the bed be under the window and still have room for our dressers along the opposite wall (our place is small so ever since we moved in we always thought it wouldn't fit like that, but we were wrong).

Decorating:

We tend to actually focus a lot on how to incorporate functionality when thinking about decoration... if that makes sense. If you notice the grid on the living room wall - that's very deliberate because we have a lot of little pictures/polaroids, and we do not want to clutter our shelves/desks with picture frames. Same concept for the strings above our bed, and the gallery coffee table - basically how can we show off our interests without our space being overwhelmed with stuff. This actually answers your last question about managing our stuff.

Our space is small so we have to be strategic. We bought those two wooden dressers to get our non-hangable clothes out of the closet, so we could move our clothes hampers in there to hide them. The best way to manage stuff in a small space is to be creative. We have this behind the door in the bathroom, out of view, holding our products. The white cabinets in the living room holds all our video games, systems, board games, and other misc stuff that we don't want on display. Our bar cart with the flowers/chalk board was our attempt to make our alcohol supplies look clean/pretty. In the kitchen we have a decorative bread box holding all our tea supplies. My partner's Lomography box sits on our filing cabinets and holds random things of hers, and also acts as a decoration piece. Maximize function + decoration at the same time to cut down on clutter.

My SO is a chef so we have 100 different spices if not more, and I finally bought one of these and filled it up completely and still have a few shelves in the pantry with more ingredients! I love this system with customizable shelf heights, braces for taller items like olive oil bottles. Can be hung over a door (secured by braces on bottom) or attached to wall permanently.

Not sure if you have any doors where you could hang this. But something like this might work?

Or under the bed storage? I live in an apartment that doesnt have a lot of storage space and we recently got a metal bed frame with 18 inches of storage space under the bed to tuck away seasonal items we dont need every day.

fire extinguishers! i keep one in the bedroom by the bed, one in the kitchen, one in the garage by the interior garage door for oil/garage fire types ( laundry room would be good also, but mine is in the garage), one in the living room by the fireplace and if you have extra rooms that are occupied, even a small personal one would be safe for each one. We only use one bedroom out of our three to sleep in.. if and when our other gets turned into a spare room for guests there will be one in there also. We keep a small one on the wall on the patio for the grill. also car but you're asking for house.. i still say everyone should have one in the car but! back to the point.

Fire alarms!

now for fun! garbage bags, reusable cleaning rags, i also have paper towels but rags i can bleach seem more economical to me.

lots of shelves! we use a lot of elfa shelving rails and shelving systems.. we love vertical shelving that hangs on the wall instead of taking up floor space! so much more storage when you can make use of walls!

blankets! comfy ones, warm ones, not so warm cuddle blankets.. all sorts!

wireless head phones.. if you watch tv at night or in bed, it's a wonderful thing to be able to wear headphones to listen instead of keeping people up.

rubbermaid storage kits from walmart! they have entire kit boxes of the rubbermaid kitchen storage containers that are epic. closetmaid door organizers we have one on the inside of our pantry door and i'm planning on putting one up in each closet it's so handy and perfect!

Shower curtains/liners, bathroom rugs, hand soap for the bathrooms/sinks and hand towels or towels to dry with..

either vinegar or counter top cleaners.. I much prefer Mrs Meyers cleaners because the dogs have a bad habit of licking wherever i clean.. Love the scents as well!

Slippers! always great for the house and comfort!
