We went with the CocoonCam monitor. It's simple enough for what we need, it's half the price of most the other monitors that do all the same thing. It connects to our phone and sends alerts. My husband can also use it whilst he's at work to drop in on baby if he wants to see him! I did a lot of research on what was best for our budget and needs and this one always came out on top.
It's an aerial view monitor that goes into the wall above the baby and comes with built in breathing monitor. I believe they use it in NICU centers in California. We've yet to put it to the test as baby isn't here yet, but it has high quality video, voice and sound features, and I believe you can take picture and video too.

Check out the cocoon monitor. It can track breathing without having a device on baby. Might be a good transition device for you.
