This book perfectly bridges together the theory you learn in school with the practical design knowledge you need in the field. Note that it is mostly about process and motion control, not PLCs.

If you are interested in the basics of Systems and Control, I highly recommend George Ellis' Control System Design Guide. It gives a much more intuitive explanation of the control concepts (PID, Gain Margin, Phase Margin, Observers,...etc) than most University Textbooks.
