Just a heads up, my dog is spoiled and didn't like just the bed by itself and requires a blanket or in my case another fluffy dog bed on top. Worth it though!

She should really invest in an elevated dog bed - you can just hose them off or wipe them down. Dog beds do get awfully gross otherwise.

I second u/i_illustrate_stuff 's suggestion on the cot beds. The Kuranda dog beds are pretty much indestructible and I believe have a warranty on them. They are pricey, but you will indeed have it forevermore. Amazon has less expensive options such as this one that you might want to try first. I'm sure you can locate one that will fit inside her crate.

I would absolutely not recommend having her uncrated yet if she's still that unreliable. This should be worked up over time at a gradual pace (leaving for short periods, gradually increasing the duration). I'd try to always leave something fun for her to chew when left to keep her busy/hopefully less likely to focus on the bedding, but some will chew regardless.

in any case, we have this self-warming cot-style bed, and my greyhound (obviously the boniest of boney dogs) does really seem to enjoy it. He's not crated all the time, though he does have to wear his basket muzzle when left unsupervised as even at 10 years old, he still can find himself getting into trouble!

FYI, they sell dog beds made out of the stuff. Coolaroo dog bed. We have a couple in the yard.

Do they have plenty of other toys to chew? Also, were the beds in crates or just laying around?

Getting an elevated dog bed might help prevent them from chewing on the beds. We've got something like this.

I worked at a kennel for a number of years and have had stuffing lovin pups in the past. The best thing to do and still have then be comfortable would be a hammock style bed. Heres how to make one:

Have several Coolaroo elevated beds (all medium rated for 75lbs) for various dogs 20-60lbs both inside and outside in sun and they seem to hold up. Had them for about 2 years now and none have needed to be replaced

My rescue boy STILL randomly marks our house (it’s been four years since adopting him).

That bed is so easy to wash and durable. I vacuum mine or hose it if it’s truly dirty (it’s meant to be hosed off).

I don’t think you will be retraining that poor abused boy at this point, I commend you on doing your best.

You might modify a sherpa pillow cover to snugly fit over the top. Maybe a fitted covering would be less appealing to bunch up and pee on.

Regardless, it may be easier to surrender to daily blanket washes and use that as his bed. I was so fed up with how most pet beds are not washer-friendly. The Coolaroo is great for allergies since I can clean it easily and wash blankies. Best of luck.

I got one of these beds for my older dog that has arthritis and my pugs and chin loved it so much they all tried to pile onto the bed with the older dog or just flat out hog it. I ordered them a 2nd one and put a pad on top and there's no more issues with pugs getting on couches where they don't belong. I can't recommend this bed enough. Green is the cheapest for a large bed, but it's sturdy and cleaner than a floor bed.

We just moved to Dallas with our corgi Winston, but last summer got really hot for KY. Winston has a coolaroo bed that keeps him elevated so he can get some air under him. We just made sure that he has lots of water in the summer and would only walk him before 10 or after dusk so he wasn't out in the heat. Just furminate regularly and give Belle a bath when she gets really hot and I think it'll be fine.

While not an overall solution, these beds are awesome for dogs who like to chew up beds. We have three dogs who arent crated anymore, but occasionally feel the need to eat their nice beds. Coolaroos are hard to chew, easy on the joints, and easy to clean/replace the mesh bit. I agree with the high-energy-ness of border collies statements in here but throwing in my two sense for the bed aspect at least

You may want to consider just knitting her some pillows or blankets, and then getting a regular pet bed. I think it's okay if the bed is plush and warm. The main thing is that the dog goes cheerfully and stays there until they are released. If you do some googling, you'll find a lot of resource on this topic - how to teach it and the different ways you can use it to help manage problem behaviors.

I actually don't use a mat, I use a raised dog bed (the criteria of "stay on this thing" is a bit easier to teach on a raised bed).

For the lure vs. reward, "bribery vs. reward" probably would've been a better description for me to use. I unfortunately don't have time to type out a full response on the topic, but here's are a link that speak to what I'm referencing

Setting up you're training so that you're consistently rewarding instead of bribing -- and practicing it in lots of places -- will get you much better training results, and will help break the "will only work if you show me food" habit.

We do not allow fake-spotting in our community as it allows in trolls. I understand your predicament in trying to get advice however. Can you tell me more about why you don't think the dog being in the kitchen is legal?

If her dog is task trained, and these are tasks, and she is disabled, it is a service dog. If it's a service dog it doesn't matter if it's no pet housing. Her and her dog have a legal right to be there. Doesn't matter if you have allergies, fears, or just don't like dogs. Your own shortcomings don't take away from her rights; just as they still wouldn't if roles were reversed.

Your only options will be: (1) find a compromise you both agree on; (2) one of you concedes and let's the other have their way; (3) you move out early (don't do unless she and your landlord agree to that); (4) or, you offer cash for her keys. It's a legal way to encourage her to move out.

Everything she is doing sounds perfectly legal, even if it might annoy and disgust you. If you try to have her kicked out or throw her out it would be considered an illegal eviction and you could owe $$$$$ to her for breaking the law. Unless she's breaking the lease, which isn't the case here, unless there's more to the story, there's no other options here. It sounds like you all aren't compatible roommates.

Edit: I hope I don't come across as I'm attacking you. That's not my intention as I truly want to help. I did want to add that she's almost certainly entirely within her rights to have the dog close to her in case of emergency. The dog needs to be able to do its job, as it's the entire purpose it's there in the house with her.

I'm not sure if the hair is a problem, but that's what I'm assuming for now. I've taught my dog he can only shake on queue to avoid releasing a ton of hair into the air. We make sure to do it outside or away from anything you don't want hair in/on. Maybe you could split the cost of a cheap dog bed or mat to keep the hair off the floor. I'm case you aren't aware, they make Elevated Dog Beds that works technically even keep the dog off of the floor. If that's still not enough, there's even these dog-onesies to help keep the hair on the dog. The last one night be hard to convince her of, being as it wouldn't be fun to have to make the dog to put it on the dog to just make dinner, nor would it be fair to make the dog wear it all the time. I hope these suggestions help. If not, let me know what you are looking for to make the situation better.

Not sure you need anything special really. A removable cover is handy to wash it periodically. I got one from PetSmart for around $40, I think.
Mine also sleeps on a blanket, the floor, my bed, couch, etc. You should be able to give your pup a padded spot for well under a $100.

Thanks! It was very encouraging. Our discussion made me realize that there IS help out there, and that she doesn't have several of the behavior problems that would probably make me cry on a daily basis!

A few things he suggested (most of which was more obedience based):

• Toys: I normally keep all of Scully's toys out, and she seems to get a bit bored of them. He suggested only introducing one at a time so she doesn't get too desensitized.
  
• "Look at me" is going to be the biggest thing we focus on in our training. Maintaining this eye contact is going to help us in a plethora of scenarios; if she is looking at me and keeping that attention, she isn't reacting to whatever is bothering her.
  
• "Place" and "Release" are also something we are going to go heavy on. I expressed how I can't be in my bedroom with the cat while she is out of the crate - he suggested we work with one of these in the house, ONLY during training. I love this idea, because she isn't going to be allowed unsupervised, out of the crate for quite some time.
  
• Slip leash vs. Harness: This was a bit of a tough sell for me. We have had great success with the Easy Walk - but he only uses a 6ft slip leash in training. I actually already had, which we tried out recently - the pulling was insane. His take is that harnesses actually increase the pulling; we'll see how that goes.
  
  Overall, I like the approach and I'm considering hiring him. He can help us get the obedience basics down first, so she is better set up for success once we see the behaviorist. I'm scheduling her evaluation with the behaviorist in about 4 weeks.
  

I have three beagles. They have gotten better, but I still can't get a dog pillow to last more than a month or so. I think they really liked pulling the stuffing out of pillows and since there is no stuffing on this one, they aren't overly motivated to chew.

I think you may just need to stop giving her plush toys like u/alf3311 said. As for beds, you may just want to invest in a Kuranda bed (https://www.amazon.com/Original-Elevated-Pet-Bed-Coolaroo/dp/B000P7JKD6/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1496333952&sr=8-3&keywords=kuranda) for your pup, which is a common dog bed people use if their dog destroys standard beds.

You could try those mesh elevated beds that are made for outdoors or in warm climates. They are supposed to be cool and breath well.

You won't need them for bad breath right away, but we give our girls these treats. They are supposed to be really good for them! I don't know if your pup will be outside much, but this is the cot my mom has for her dogs, and it seems to be really high quality. (:
