You're probably going to have to look for something from either Cowon or Sony these days. Personally I grabbed a Zune HD 64gb before they were discontinued and its still going strong 5 years later, incredibly well built and the music software still works great in Windows 10. I'm not sure what desktop software these two choices I linked used though so a little more research might be necessary. Good Luck!

I'm quite happy with my Cowon Plenue D - $180, great battery life, compact, nice display, 32 GB internal/takes external SD cards up to 128 GB.

I also had the IQQ C18 which is supposed to be a budget knockoff of the FiiOs. Good enough for the $70 price I suppose, but there were a bunch of little things that infuriated me. The way it ordered the folders by date rather than alphabetical order, how it wouldn't resume the previous song when you turned it back on, and how it always faded the songs in. But good battery life. NiNTAUS and xDuoo are often mentioned in the same conversations.

Ruizu, Benjie, and AGPTek are brands in the $20-$50 range. Small players that fit in your pocket, good battery life, but fewer features than the more expensive players. Probably a few software bugs like the aforementioned IQQ, but my memory is a little shoddy.

No clue on how it would perform when connected to a sound system, but SanDisk is highly praised.

Get that instead. cheaper, battery lasts over 100 hours on a charge and plays anything you can toss at it. Will play high impendence headphones and needs no pre amp. Uses micro sd cards so you can swap out music any time. Ipods other than the classic are more trouble than they are worth.
