They're these awesome two-sided storage boxes:
Creative Options Thread Organizer
Each one is just large enough to hold a full set of DMC.
most of us use these https://www.amazon.com/Creative-Options-5315-Thread-Organizer/dp/B001IYMCJO/ref=sr_1_4?s=arts-crafts&ie=UTF8&qid=1543476075&sr=1-4&keywords=thread+organizer
not only are the inexpensive but they're also see throughish
I like the Creative Options Thread Organizer. They are marketed to craft stores but these cases hold 48 cars. Each side has a double-sized slot which will hold the bigger ones like Hiway Hauler. The price on Amazon jumps between $7 and $11.

Amazon FTW! I love that it is two sides and the hard plastic bobbins fit PERFECT!

Would totally suggest this case I got on Amazon. It’s double sided and fits A LOT of bobbins.
Use these bobbins to wind it onto with this bobbin-ator (make sure you label either with a sharpie or these stickers ) and store them in this container. Of all the ways I’ve seen stashes stored, this makes the most sense to me 🤷🏻♀️. It’s a great mindless activity you can handle while binge watching tv ☺️

Thread organizers from amazon.
Most cars fit just fine. Those that don't can still fit since there's a double wide slot on each side. Some cars are low enough that fitting two in one slot works as well.
Also glad I could help with the images!
For the cases they're on Amazon and seem pretty popular amongst collectors.

same price on amazon as well right now if you're buying something from them and want to add one or two to your order. http://www.amazon.com/Creative-Options-5315-Thread-Organizer/dp/B001IYMCJO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1450543546
I have this big one: https://www.amazon.com/Creative-5315-Options-Thread-Organizer/dp/B001IYMCJO
It's pretty big, but the slots are too narrow to lay the bobbins on their sides. They do fit up&down, but it is annoying. However, if you really want everything in one box, it might be a good option. It holds at least 300 bobbins, probably up to 350 if you squeezed them in a bit.
I like the plastic bobbins. https://www.amazon.com/Darice-Plastic-Floss-Bobbins-1000-Piece/dp/B0018N26FU

There is cases like this Creative Options Case for loose cars - keeps them separated so they're not scratching each other. The same as a Plano (some number I forget).. but they work great, double sided and you can keep a lot of cars in there.
If you time it right the same cases from Amazon Prime go on sale for $6.75 once and awhile. Ordered 2 last month, but it looks like prices went up again.
Amazon link for the cases.

I use a 2x4 Ikea Kallax unit to store most of my sewing materials. Two of the sections have small drawer inserts where I keep most of my tools and notions, and the others have bins to store fabric and other bigger supplies, with one dedicated to holding my patterns. I store books (lined up with bookends) and the plastic organizer bins that have my thread in them on top, as well as a coffee cup with my most-used notions (fabric and paper scissors, water-soluble marking pens, seam ripper, chalk pencils, etc.). There's also a box to hold quilting fabric scraps.
For current WIP's, I have an organizer cart parked next to it. The drawer units pull out completely, so I can carry one over to my table, which is nice. I do more quilting than garment sewing, so I'm not sure if the drawers would be very well sized for big clothing projects.
But really, more than specific products, I think it's mostly just getting into a mindset of having a place for everything, and remembering to put it back as soon as you're done using it. I have to, since my sewing table is also our dining table. I'm not sure I'd have the discipline if I had a dedicated sewing room and I could close the door on the mess! I also moved apartments in March, and got rid of quite a bit of materials before then, which helped -- I felt a lot less attached to things when I thought about packing them, loading them into a vehicle, then unpacking them and carrying them up three flights of stairs to my new third-floor apartment.
I just got one of these doodads and I'm pretty pleased with it: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001IYMCJO/

(or search "Creative Options organizer" on Amazon)
Free shipping for orders over $25. So $27 for 3, with free shipping. That's an amazing deal. Ebay doesn't come close to that price. If you manage to find them at a retail store they're $12+.
> Just curious what everyone uses to store loose cars.
I've got like 10 of these things, and you won't find a serious collector without at least that many.
Or, if you're a worldclass cheapskate like me, you could go an even cheaper route and buy 2"x4" ziplock bags by the hundreds. Bag the cars and throw them in a box. http://www.ebay.com/itm/100-Ziplock-2-x-4-Reclosable-Clear-Plastic-Bags-2-Mil-2-x-4-/261111778245?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3ccb798bc5
Thanks for reminding me about hotcases, though. I've been meaning to get foam cases for some of my more serious cars.

Thread shouldn't be kept on those boards because of UV and it picks up dust. When you sew with dusty thread you are putting those particles into your machine and shortening it's life. I use the Plano 5315 storage boxes. They were originally developed for storing the Jammers diecast cars, but they are perfect for keeping both a large spool of thread and it's matching bobbin in one spot. It keeps the dust out and it's easy to tuck your thead collection away into a dark corner. This is the best solution I have come up with in my 40 odd years of sewing.
Plano 5315 Currently $11 on Amazon.
This is what I use. The Creative Options Thread Organizer. It fits many paint jars and has a handy handle for carrying. I am about to expand my paint collection such that I will have to buy another, but it's still a manageable solution. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001IYMCJO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_0XngAbJFN0J41

I have this one, when I bought it a year ago, it was $6.87. It is currently $15 and change. I like the carrying handle
edit: currently cheaper at Joann's.
For $63 you could have gotten 7 of these cases, each can hold around 48 small to medium sized cars
So that comes to about 336 cars
