I don't believe ATX power supplies have to be a mod, do they? The Printrboard has an ATX 6 pin port right on it, so then all you need is the connection on the mainboard connector to make it think there's a board there. That can be a diy project, but you can also buy premade ones like this

Awesome. I am by no means an expert but had to do a tonne of reading to come up with my setup and from what I can tell there are a few ways of doing the following:

PSU: Assuming your main PSU is strong enough you could in theory use extenders to power your DAS from the same PSU but I think there are a few downfalls to doing this. As a result I would suggest getting a redundant PSU (400w+). You can buy special adapters which fit into the 24 pin plug or alternatively you can use a paperclip. Either way what you're doing is making the PSU turn on as soon as it has power from the wall opposed to needing a power button. Sample jumper listing

SAS Controller board: This is the component you need plugged into a PCI slot in your primary NAS box. I bought a LSI SAS9200-16e16 - H3-25140-02B. I didn't need to do any flashing with this and it was plug and play with my NAS box which is running Ubuntu Server. Sample listing

SAS Expander board: This is the board which is connected back to the controller board. Think of the controller board as an outlet and the expander board as a multi-plug type situation. The ebay listing title I got was called HP (487738-001) 3G SAS EXPANDER G6, G7 - FH PCIe-x8 INT/EXT (468406-B21). In theory from what I read it is possible there are alternatives to using one of these but this is the route I wanted to go down. The benefits as I understand them is that you can disconnect your DAS from your NAS in a very clean way. Sample Expander board listing

SFF-8088 SAS to SFF-8088 SAS cable: This is the cable which externally connects your NAS to your DAS. In theory, this is optional as you could go down the route of buying a SFF-8088 to 4xSATA cable. The downside of this however is it doesn't allow the NAS and DAS to be clean separate units IMO. These are very expensive at a lot of outlets but can be had for $14.99 here (I am UK based and even with import taxes this is cheap).

SFF-8087 SAS to 4x SATA cable: This is what connects the data from your DAS drives back to the SAS Expander board. A single cable connects to four drives so I have two of these connected to my controller at the moment. Sample listing

First off, using an ATX power supply is not a mod. That is the original intended power supply for the Printrboard. There is a socket for the six-pin video card power plug right on the board. In fact, the barrel socket power port is just a jumper to that socket and must be unplugged to upgrade to an ATX power supply.

Some ATX power supplies do require a short bit of wire running from the green wire on the large connector to any black wire on the connector before they will turn on, but that isn't scary, is completely reversible, and isn't even required on all power supplies. You can buy a premade jumper for precisely that purpose. Some ATX power supplies even include the jumper connector.

Now to answer your original question: You are looking for a 12 volt power supply with an ampere rating of 6 amps or more and a 2.1mm X 5.5mm, center positive, barrel style plug. Something like this one should work for you.

Let me be clear in why I prefer the ATX power supply. The ATX power supply is SAFER than the smaller barrel plug power supply. If I was going to run my Printrbot and leave the house for a while, I would feel much better using the ATX power supply. For fire safety, the ATX power supply is the better choice. Sure, the wiring harness looks a bit like an octopus, but a few zip-ties or velcro wraps will tame that beast.

If you don't have a second PSU, yep, jump it. You can either use a paper clip, or get a dirt-cheap jumper plug (like $2-6): https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N8Q0TOE?psc=1

If you do this, write down a checklist of things to disconnect each time you run the PSU to run the pump:

  1. CPU
  2. GPU
  3. HDD/SSD SATAs (probably not necessary, but I do it just to be ultra-safe)

A lesser known but significant issue is that you don't want to mix and match cables from different power supply brands and sometimes even different power supplies of the same brand, it could possibly fry your HDD. These cables can be tough to find and order separately, so I just use a power splitter extension instead.

You'll also need to buy 2x SSFF port for the R5 box and your main, plus extra SFF-8088 cables (1m-2m length), this starts $$$ adding up fast unless you can place both devices very close and snake the SFF-8087 forward breakout cables through the R5 case then through the main system case to the HBA unless you have a card with external 8087s. I haven't seen any SFF-8087 forward breakout cables longer than 3.3ft though and you'll probably have these both connected internally so these boxes will have to be right next to each other...

I didnt search extensively, but I did see a SFF-8088 to sata 6ft cable, but it had no reviews and the title showed 8087(maybe so it gets noticed on search results), but the description was correct as 8088. Depending on your card then this might be an option. This is where nas boxes come in with network connections for farther distances or you invest in all these cables and adaptors so it doesn't look janky with cables snaking in and out of the cases.

woah, Haven't seen a PSU without a power switch in a WHILE. It's fine, not necesarrily an issue. Do you have a multimeter/ are comfortable using one to test whether or not it's getting voltage?

if you've got a friend with another psu to test, that's another option. My bet would be you have a bad power supply if you're not getting anything to the motherboard and all your connectors are snug and in their proper place.

I tried some little doo-hickey from Amazon to test the PSU. The fan on the PSU started right up as soon as I flipped the switch. Sounds like it could be the motherboard or power button on the case.

Your PSU is not powering up, which makes sense as the 24-pin connector is not attached to anything. You need to use the paperclip trick (or get one of these).

You can use the same motherboard with either SFX or ATX power supplies, the pins are the same, and the cable colors being different is just because that's what Silverstone chose to use. You jump the same pins in the ATX connector. Or, you can do yourself a favor, and pick up one of these.

The Power On pin is the same for all modern power supplies. Get this or match up the pins in that picture to your powersupply and use a paperclip.

You could just get a small cheap mini/ATX power supply and there are two jumpers on the ATX plug you short together and you can use it without a computer. If you aren't comfortable shorting a jumper they also sell a little dummy plug you can plug into the ATX connector on a computer power supply and it will work without a computer. If you do it this way, get a power supply with an on-off switch to make it easier for you. You can also look into bench power supplies but those would probably cost more and they aren't really for permanent set up.
