A couple of things: even though 4 GB is technically enough it's going to be painfully slow. Over time software releases become more complex and more demanding. So I recommend at least 8 GB. It doesn't take computer knowledge to install, just some mechanical ability and comfort with a screwdriver. You can find guides online or maybe find a friend who is comfortable with opening it up. Just be careful because the screws have to go back in exactly the same place (there are just 10 screws on the bottom side of the computer; you don't have to remove any screws once you open it up). Some of the screws look the same but there are are some subtle differences.

And if the computer is crashing a lot that's probably not because of the old software. I'm a little concerned that it's a hard drive failure. You can install the trial of this program and it will tell you if the hard drive is failing. If you do have a mid 2011 Mac mini then the RAM should fit just fine.

From what I could find on Google the 1600 MHz memory might work depending on the exact model of RAM. At worst it just won't boot and you'll have to put the old RAM back in and get the correct RAM. It won't damage it though.

You can install two 8GB 204-pin DDR3 PC3-10600 (1333MHz) non-ECC SODIMM modules in the ThinkPad X220i. Both single-rank (1Rx8) and dual-rank (2Rx8) modules will work fine.

The official Lenovo BIOS limits RAM speed to 1333MHz in the X220/X220i but you can potentially get speeds up to 1866MHz with a modified BIOS (and modules that support those speeds). There are additional details about that here.

Same thing occurred with my early 2011 macbook pro, i ended up buying a Crucial MX100 SSD with hard drive caddy. I used these instructions to do it my self: fixit has very detailed instructions, youtube video helps also, lifehacker has good instructions for what to do after you install.
Last thing i would upgrade is the ram, more is better. I had 4gb stock, now i have two 8gb sticks from crucial installed. Check this ifixit installation of the memory sticks.

Hello. Your 2011 Mac Mini actually isn’t compatible with the ram in the amazon link. That model year uses pc-10600 (1333MHz) ddr3 so-dimms.

I had a base model 2012 13 inch MBP, now I have upgraded it to a Samsung 850 PRO 512GB SSD and two Crucial 8 GB RAM. I performs nicely without lag or stutter on the latest MacOS Sierra and I’m waiting for that APFS on High Sierra cause it’ll make it faster and more reliable.

I would not chance putting 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM in your iMac (which only supports 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM) Also if you are buying two sticks that's $100.

I just upgraded my MacMini with 16GB of crucial memory and they were super great and it was less inexpensive than the stuff you are looking at. Looking at buying directly is $80.

I paid like 180 for 16gb ram two years ago. Its an absolute steal at this point.
