I just built my first NAS/PLEX server and things are going great. Total cost was around $1300

this sweet mobo ties it all together. It's got a quad-core Atom processor, 12 SATA ports across 3 RAID controllers, and supports 64GB of RAM, all in a Mini ITX form factor.

You can get your RAM $30 cheaper at amazon. Edit: I missed that your prices were in CAD, not USD. So feel free to ignore this.

Your PSU isn't going to work. You need a 1U PSU, like this instead.

If you're going to go with FreeNAS, consider buying a second USB drive in order to mirror your boot drive.

And finally, I'm assuming you're planning to do RAID-Z1 (single-parity) with 4x3TB drives. Consider instead either buying a 5th drive and doing RAID-Z2 (double-parity) or using mirrored pairs (you lose 3TB of usable space). RAID5/RAID-Z1 is unsafe when dealing with larger drives, because the impact of resilvering on drive loss is likely to cause a second drive to fail. If you only have a single parity drive, losing a second drive during resilvering means you lose the entire array.

If this can be done cheaper, its a steal.

Note: The i3-4330 does not support VT-D. It is a low power hyper threaded dual core with decent performance. I plan to sell it for $120-130 and purchase an i5-4440s for $150-160 to get 4 cores and VT-D.

SSD 128GB for the FreeNAS will be valuable if you are going to have lots of traffic in your home server. Then the SSD will act as cache, increasing the speed of the transfer.

I have this mobo. It works well. But I'm facing some issues with the IPMI (simply is dead), so I cannot remote power on the server. Now it is 100% powered on all the time. not an (big) issue.

This is my server setup. Bought the itens in USA when I was on vacation there.

For the HDDs a little tip: Buy all same sizes (does not matter the brand).
Security tip for paranoic: buy same hdds sizes, different brands, and different batchs.

If you use the HDD same size, you can setup the storage in RAIDZ. Get full features that ZFS can bring.

Using ECC RAM here would add 2.3% to the total cost of this build. In exchange, the resulting server would have a memory subsystem that you can trust to either a) return the correct information or b) halt the system.

Have you looked into how well that Avaton will do for Plex encoding? Its not exactly the most powerful thing out there... You can get a Xeon E31241 and a SuperMicro X10SLL-F (that's what I have) for $300 and $150, which is less total than your chosen motherboard/cpu combo.

Edit: Also trade out that memory for some server memory with ECC support. I used Crucial but a lot of people seem to like Kingston RAM.

Edit 2: I just noticed that whole Canadian thing. Maybe its not as expensive as I realized....but do look into how much transcoding with Plex you want to do and what the Avaton can do and you might want to spend a bit more and go with a more powerful chip like the stuff I suggested.

Quad nic is nice to have. It has 2 already built in. (I believe). The box uses ECC unregistered mem.

It's much easier to reason about NAS builds if you don't pollute the parts (and pricing) with the actual drives.

I've built a NAS recently with an i3-4130T and it performs adequately. It can encrypt fast enough for 1 Gb/s LAN, and in hindsight I should have even gone down to a Pentium. If you want to use encryption and do a lot of disk-to-disk transfers, you may want to get the E3.

Note that the ML310e Gen8v2 will max out at 32GB of RAM because of an Intel limitation.

That sounds perfectly promising, thanks for providing one complete reasonable setup, thats pretty much what I wanted to see under my post :)

So just for my conclusion:
