u/cargous · 7 pointsr/ableton

I have the same 13” mid 2012 MBP and am running 16gb of RAM w/ a 1TB SSD. I also have the same version of Ableton as you. The official specs from Apple list 8gb RAM as the max but it can for sure support 16gb. Based on the specs you provided I’d guess you have the i5 version which comes stock with 4gb of RAM and the 500gb HDD. Your model will support 16gb and you’ll see a significant boost in performance, with Ableton and the computer in general, if you add 16gb and an SSD. If you leave the standard 500gb HDD, I'd assume you'd only see a moderate boost in performance since that's really the big driver of slow performance. I can't speak to the performance of Omnisphere as I don't have a working copy but I do know it made a significant boost for pretty much everything in Ableton and otherwise.

My recommendation would be to add 16gb of RAM plus an SSD. They are both relatively straight forward processes as well (links below), just need the right tools and to take your time. Watch YouTube tutorials. Attaching links to the items I have in mine. I'd recommend getting the Crucial RAM and Samsung SSD (which is what I have and has a higher performance rating), but the Crucial SSD will be adequate as well.

Let me know if you have other questions on it.

It's still worth it if you are willing to exchange the HDD for an SSD and insert 8 GB RAM or better yet 16 GB RAM. With the original HDD and 4 GB RAM it will be slow of course, you can significantly speed it up with those upgrades. Battery is also easily exchangeable. That being said, the machine weighs 2.06 kg, which is quite hefty for a 13" laptop these days.

In terms of macOS support, it can run both the current macOS 10.14 Mojave and the upcoming macOS 10.15 Catalina. Catalina is guaranteed to receive security updates until autumn 2022, so you should be good for quite some time even if Apple should decide to drop the machine from support with macOS 10.16 next year.

In the following, I'll attach hints regarding which RAM and SSDs are compatible.

-----

The MacBook Pro 2012 supports up to 16 GB RAM (2 x 8 GB RAM modules). It has two RAM slots, meaning two RAM modules in total will fit in. A higher total amount than 16 GB RAM won't work due to a limitation in the logic board.

You need RAM which matches the following specification:

PC3-12800 DDR3 1600 MHz, 204-pin

Here are some examples of RAM modules that work flawlessly in the MBP 2012:

u/pdmcmahon · 3 pointsr/MacOS

Maybe try installing 10.13.2 first, then try to install the combo update for 10.13.3?

Also, upgrade the RAM in that Mini immediately, it supports 16 GB, 4 GB on anything after about 10.7 is way to little. Source, I am running 10.13.3 with 16 GB. Here is the RAM for the 2010 Mini.

I agree that the Crucial kits are identical spec wise, when I looked at them on crucial's site the only difference I saw was that that Mac version was Halogen free, so I purchased the slightly cheaper one at the time (the Mac version), and I can confirm it works without any issues in my new DS1817+

Sorry it took so long!

Plan 1 - a new laptop and a refurbished one: If you want to get the 13 year old something nicer, go for the ThinkPad T450 (NOT T450s) directly from Lenovo's site.

http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/thinkpad/t-series/t450/

I'd configure it with i5-5200U, 8 GB RAM, 180 GB SSD (deselect the NGFF), 1080p nontouch display. I'd buy this today, 6 December, as you get significant ($300 ish) savings. It should cost $1020 or so when configured.

Then, for your 6 year old, buy this ThinkPad X201 with Core i5-520M, 4GB RAM, 128GB SSD for $220:

http://arrowdirect.com/lenovo-thinkpad-x201-2-4ghz-intel-core-i5-gen1-128-ssdgb-4096gb.html

Total: $1253.70 plus tax

Plan 2 - Refurbished monsters: I like this plan a little more, but you have to do a bit of work yourself. Buy two of these ThinkPad T430s laptops with i5-3320M, 4GB RAM, 128GB SSD from Arrow Direct:

http://arrowdirect.com/lenovo-t430s-2-60ghz-intel-core-i5-gen3-128-ssdgb-4096mb.html

Then, some upgrades. Buy two of these Crucial BX100 250GB SSDs from Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/Crucial-BX100-250GB-Internal-Solid/dp/B00RQA6TEI

(I know that the laptops come with SSDs, but they will be crusty old slow 2011 SSDs). Please don't buy the newer BX200 as they are made cheaply and they are twice as slow.

Also, buy two of these 16 GB RAM kits from here:

http://www.amazon.com/Crucial-DDR3L-1600-PC3-12800-CT2K8G3S160BM-CT2C8G3S160BM/dp/B008LTBJFW/

These will take some time to put together, but they will give you two 3.9 LB monsters.

Total: $990.28 plus tax plus twenty minutes of your time

Plan 3 - The HP route: Buy two of these HP EliteBook 9480M laptops with i5-4310U, 4GB RAM, 180GB SSD from Arrow Direct:

http://arrowdirect.com/hp-compaq-elitebook-folio-9480m-2-00ghz-intel-core-i5-gen4-180-ssdgb-4096mb-5.html

Then buy the same 16GB RAM kits from Amazon. You don't need to replace the SSDs as they are from 2013-2014 and are just as fast as today's SSDs.

Total: $1002.68 plus tax plus ten minutes of your time

Of these three plans, I like Plan 2 the best as long as you have the time (and judging from the fact that you use Gentoo, you should).

The MacBook Pro 9,2 is the MacBook Pro 13” 2012 non retina. The ram can be upgraded to 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 PC3-12800 (1600 MHz) SO-DIMMS. Crucial ram like this is what we use for our customers Macs.

I highly recommend replacing your hard drive with an SSD like the Crucial MX500 SATA 2.5” or the Samsung EVO 860 SATA 2.5”, both available on Amazon.

The iFixit guides will show you how to replace the parts https://www.ifixit.com/Device/MacBook_Pro_13%22_Unibody_Mid_2012.

u/Fat_Ass_Reddit · 3 pointsr/mac

Depending on your budget, I would recommend to max it out and basically turn it into the server version. Replace the HD with a SSD, and max out the RAM at 16 GB:

120 GB SSD

16 GB RAM

If the RAM is too much money, you can honestly do just fine with 8 GB RAM for half the cost.

The RAM is the easiest to replace, the drive takes a little more time but their are tons of videos and resources on ifixit.com and OWC.

If you want to take it a step further, you can buy the [DIY Dual Drive Kit] (https://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/DIYIMM11D2/) and use the SSD as your boot drive, while still being able to use the 1TB for storage.

I've done all this myself and use my mini as a server that is on 24/7.

I got this one:https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008LTBJFW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Along with his screwdriver kit:https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01K1PHXJE/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

They both worked perfectly. Took longer to take the screws out than install the ram. Simplicity itself. The ram makes such a big difference it's hard to describe.

u/ScruffyAlex · 2 pointsr/synology

It has 2 DDR3 sodimm slot. IIRC it has to be MacBook compatible memory.

This is the memory kit I got for the upgrade: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B008LTBJFW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1

Amazon has Crucial compatible ram in 16 gig as well. Works great (at least it has for over a year for me). Don't worry about brand, worry about it being listed as mac compatible, any that are should work just fine. (also, ones that aren't listed as mac compatible may still work, it's just not worth the time to go through and test which ones do)

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008LTBJFW?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_search_detailpage

Cheers,

u/[deleted] · 2 pointsr/mac

Yeah, you're fine.

Increase the RAM in your machine — ideally, completely max it out — and you will notice a major performance increase.

Apple says your machine only supports 8 GB, but 16 GB is the actual limit. Buy and install this. (I have an Early 2011 MBP, which is also listed as 8 GB max, and 16 GB runs perfectly in it.)

While I'm giving you advice, grab a USB hard disk (or a Time Capsule) and use Time Machine, included with OS X, to keep your machine backed up. You never know when it will save your ass (and your data).

u/pointlesslyeducated · 2 pointsr/mac

Dont worry about this. its a RAM displacement issue.

Did you install new RAM recently? did you drop your macbook recently? This might be the cause of it.

unscrew your laptop...locate the where the ram is on the laptop...take out the ram...and gently BUT firmly re-insert the ram in again.

this should do the trick...and try turning on the laptop again.

This link will help you locate where the RAM is on your laptop:
https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBook+Pro+13-Inch+Unibody+Mid+2012+RAM+Replacement/10374

if you STILL get the 3 beeps (which very likely WONT be the case)...likelyhood is that your RAM has failed. You will need to buy new RAM.

if you need to buy a new set of RAM:

Hey, I had ordered directly via the Crucial website last year. But this is the link on Amazon of the one that I bought. https://www.amazon.in/dp/B008LTBJFW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_ylWFzbG8W17BJ

This seems to be a good deal, although not fulfilled by Amazon, cause it seems that Crucial has increased the prices and made it almost double.

I still have the 4GB RAM. Can't find any use but don't want to throw it away.

I haven't installed a new hard disk yet. That's my next step and I'm saving for that right now. What I'm planning to do is to move the current HDD in place of the CD ROM and install a new 128GB flash drive in the area vacated by the existing HDD.

u/bflaminio · 2 pointsr/LifeProTips

Absolutely. If anyone has a pre-Retina Mac (the kind where you could still upgrade the drive and memory, follow these steps:

  1. Backup all your data

  2. Download macOS Sierra but don't install it; instead, burn it to a USB stick using this: http://diskmakerx.com/

  3. Buy this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B008LTBJFW

  4. Buy this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01G844L88

  5. Install both. It's easy.

  6. Boot with the macOS Sierra stick you made earlier and do a clean install.

  7. Marvel at how freakin' fast your old Mac is now. You don't even need the OP's LPT. Apps open instantly; even big ones.
u/yaroto98 · 2 pointsr/buildapc

I'm upgrading a few laptops for my small business. I usually adhere to some pretty strict superstitions with regards to RAM. I try not to mix and match since it seems like the few times I have it didn't turn out well.

My question is this. I'm buying 10 8GB sticks of RAM. The 16GB kit is cheaper per stick. Can I buy 5 kits and split the sticks?

u/brownox · 2 pointsr/synology

I would recommend this RAM.

The 1815+ can recognize the full amount and it can be useful in multiple transcoded streams.

I would get a router that supports the link agreggation capabilties of the 1815+

Don't forget an uninteruptable power supply.

For drives, I would probably go with HGSTs. This is of course based on backblaze's data, but it appears that some of the failure rates are changing, so you may want to look into that.

8 (plus one or two on hand for failures) is a huge chunk of change. I recommend watching hard drive prices on camel, camel, camel for price drops.

Welcome to the world of Synology. They are fucking awesome.

Any chance you could link me to the SSD you're talking about? I just ordered THIS memory kit upgrade, but I'm interested in a SSD soon as well.

u/ArnTheGreat · 1 pointr/qnap

I bought the 2GB unit, and it came shipped with 2x1 (It only has 2 slots). I -thought- I had to buy the 8GB version for some reason, but my purchase history says other-wise.

For HDDs I am using [these beauts] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01M1BUBSO/) To be fair, I ahve fairly sensitive hearing, and my wife and guests don't notice 'em much. But right now I am listening to music, and I can CLEARLY tell someone is streaming something because I hear those HDDs a-churning. I am probably ~4 feet away from it currently in my office, though.

For memory I bought these beasts as they were basically the only confirmed ones to work.

u/SuperKamarameha · 1 pointr/applehelp

Thanks for the reply. I think it was good quality RAM just based on customer reviews when I purchased it in September 2013 (Crucial 16GB Kit https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008LTBJFW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1). No problems until earlier this year after about 5 years of use, and the only problem was the pixellation stuff—no speed issues.

u/construktz · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

For a second monitor, this one is extremely popular for its price and high resolution.

If you just want a high res laptop but don't want to spend a lot, the HP Envy 14 is low quality, but is the cheapest option I know with a 3200x1800 display.

If you want something more programming oriented, I'd suggest getting the Lenovo ThinkPad T430.

It's virtually indestructible, has the best keyboard around for programming, looks very professional, and is cheap enough to allow for RAM and SSD upgrades.

Don't bother with all that application stuff- everymac.com is a simple way to look up your machine. Is it the 2013 27" version?

http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/specs/imac-core-i7-3.5-27-inch-aluminum-late-2013-specs.html

This gives the exact type of RAM you will need and maximum supported.

the iMac can hold up to 4x8GB chips so 32GB is your maximum memory. It probably comes with 2x4GB chips in it so you can add on in the other slots to upgrade your memory. I would suggest at least another 8GB for your editing work and maybe another 8-16G if you want to dedicate some to Bootcamp or a virtual machine (Parallels Desktop is a good example).

Amazon can beat OWCs prices anyday. This is the type of RAM you need: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B008LTBJFW?pc_redir=1409054757&robot_redir=1

That is to add 16GB to the current 8GB it comes with so you will have 24GB in that scenario. Should be plenty!

OWC is $50 more for a 16GB kit...

Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B008LTBJFW/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1410717458&sr=8-1&pi=SX200_QL40

Crucial RAM has worked great. I have 24GB of RAM in mine Their memory is Mac certified and works flawlessly

Fair warning. The process of adding the ram is enough to make your balls shrink to the size of raisins because you have to pull the existing 8GB of ram (2 x 4GB sticks) with considerable force using an anti-static cloth and a pair of pliers. You see although there are two slots free you must swap the 16GB kit into where the 8Gb kit is and the put the 8GB kit in the empty slots or else the iMac won't boot. I don't know why but this is also corroborated by other reviews. You have very little leverage on the factory RAM which is why you must resort to these tactics. I'm not kidding - Superman couldn't get those sticks out with his 'batin arm without using tools.

i upgraded two of my kids 2012 15" non-retina mbp. The 500gb SSDs were under $100 and the 16gb ram was just over $100. IMO the old disk isn't worth it but i did buy an inexpensive silicone rubber usb hard drive thingie that nobody ever used once upgraded. The laptops ran better than new and neither one of them (one out of the house now) can think of a reason to upgrade although they just do web and photos, no gaming other than old sims etc.
I don't think you could get an ipad for 250.

Seguro? en el link la segunda opción de RAM es PC3-12800 a 1.35V, creo. Checale bien.

The 13 inch Mid 2010 model will accept and use 16GB according to Mactracker. The 15 and 17 inch models do not.

That site you linked to is a ripoff, too. Here's a 16GB upgrade for half the price. http://www.amazon.com/Crucial-DDR3L-1600-PC3-12800-CT2K8G3S160BM-CT2C8G3S160BM/dp/B008LTBJFW/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1425875836&sr=8-4&keywords=16gb+memory+macbook+pro+mid+2010#Ask

OP: Get an SSD (I highly recommend this one, which I use in my Mid-2012 cMBP 13")

Also, get some more RAM. I have 16GB of this Crucial RAM and the machine runs great.

Make these upgrades and you should be in a better place.

I have the same Mac and bought these a few years ago. https://www.amazon.com/Crucial-PC3-12800-SODIMM-204-Pin-Memory/dp/B008LTBJFW?ref_=fsclp_pl_dp_1. Worked great and no complaints.

u/EvioliteSSB · 1 pointr/macbook

Alright, so I’ll pick up a 16GB kit from Amazon next week. Then a couple weeks later, the SSD. Which RAM upgrade do you think would be better between this one and this one? I’m totally new to macs, so all help is appreciated!

u/skiattle · 1 pointr/mac

This laptop, this RAM, and this hard drive. It's what we run standard as our work machines. They are fast, dependable and straight forward. You could save some money by going with an 8GB RAM install, or splurge and get a 960GB SSD hard drive.

u/dopefish_lives · 1 pointr/photography

I do all my editing on a 4 year old 15inch macbook pro and it's absolutely solid for lightroom, photoshop and panorama stitching. If you buy a used non retina macbook, switching out the hard drive for an SSD and putting 16GB of ram in it will only cost you about $160. Get the core i7 and this set up will cost you around $800 and last you years.

With the older macbooks you can also switch out the CD drive with a 2TB hard drive and have all your photos locally, get a data doubler and a 2tb drive and you'll have yourself a beast of a machine with all the storage you need. They give you all the instructions, it's really quite simple

  1. If it aint broke don't fix it. Assuming you dont have anything super critical that you would need at a moments notice, you can just wait for it to fail and then pick up some new ones :)

  2. When checking to see if RAM is compatible you are going to want to look at what clock speed your motehrboard supports, the max ammount of RAM is supports, and the RAM size it supports.

Here Is RAM compatible with your PC. Choose any of the sizes you like but I would suggest going with the 8GB or up.

To learn more about PCs I would suggest This 3 part series on builgin a PC.

I have seen people upgrade their NAS with https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B008LTBJFW/?tag=pcp0f-20&th=1

Would this work with the DS1517+

u/elducky · 1 pointr/thinkpad

Often called low voltage and has an "L" attached to it. Example: http://www.amazon.com/Upgrade-ThinkPad-1600MHz-PC3L-12800-PARTS-QUICK/dp/B00HSOHY0U

Many of the L are also dual voltage, so you can use in either 1.5/1.35 systems. Example: http://www.amazon.com/Crucial-PC3-12800-SODIMM-204-Pin-CT2C8G3S160BM/dp/B008LTBJFW/ref=pd_cp_pc_0

I'm coming from a custom-built PC background and looking to make the new iMac with Retina 5K Display (Retina iMac) my first Apple computer. From my research on configuring 32GB memory to order vs upgrading myself, I could not find any evidence that the modules Apple uses are any better than available from third-parties.

u/good1god · 1 pointr/applehelp

If you are regularly using Photoshop and Lightroom adding memory will definitely help. The SSD will help speed up opening programs/boot times/saving files/etc. The additional RAM will allow you to work on larger image files in PS and LR without slowing down. You can adjust the amount of RAM they use but honestly the more you can allocate the merrier.

I have my 2009 MBP setup in a similar fashion. 120GB SSD in main slot and 500GB 7200RPM HDD in an optical disc adapter. Basically anything I'm working on I move to the SSD and archive on the HDD when finished. I backup both via a USB HDD on my AirPort Extreme.

For $200 you can definitely do a decent upgrade.

Amazon

It seems it is pretty specific but above is the 16GB kit i bought for mine. 16GB may be overkill since it doesn’t seem that MacOS uses above 8GB in my use case.

Crucial 16gb Mac RAM (8gb is only like $12 cheaper)

Samsung 850 EVO 500gb SSD (excellent SSD at a mid-level price)

SanDisk Plus 120gb SSD (cheap SSD that'll work fine)

I hope that helps! I have a 2010 white unibody Macbook that was upgraded to 8gb RAM and a 256gb SSD and it's still very fast at web browsing and basic tasks like that.

u/bidoville · 1 pointr/applehelp

Awesome - I'll probably do that.

Last question (thanks again): I noticed a Crucial memory product that's similar to the product you recommended with higher ratings. Thoughts on this one or why the Corsair is best?

http://www.amazon.com/Crucial-PC3-12800-SODIMM-204-Pin-CT2C8G3S160BM/dp/B008LTBJFW/ref=psdc8_t1_B006ON5KZC_B008LTBJFW

u/rage_311 · 0 pointsr/chromeos

This comment obviously got some downvotes, but it's the most helpful one in this thread. That box is WAY overpriced -- probably 2x as much as it should be.

Compare it to this build, which gives you a much faster CPU, 16GB RAM (4x as much), and a 500GB SSD (instead of 16GB) for less money:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HWP6CMG
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B008LTBJFW
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HWHVOQS

The fact that this build doesn't have ChromeOS is a moot point, since all that power would be wasted on it anyway. The point is, that seller is just ripping people off.
