Go read Terry Pratchett's Discworld City Watch books. Start with Guards! Guards!, follow it with Men At Arms, Feet of Clay, Jingo, The Fifth Elephant, Night Watch, and Thud.

Joel Rosenberg had D'Shai and Hour of the Octopus which are two detective mysteries set in a loosely medieval-Japan-ish fantasy setting. They are both pretty good, especially Hours of the Octopus - cleverly written, with good puzzles and clues that make sense. In the first book, he is investigating a murder more-or-less independently (more a PI of sorts) while in the second, as a result of events in the first, he is retained by a medieval lord to serve as effectively a detective.

These two books are by far my favourite work by Rosenberg; his Guardians of the Flame books are much more well known, but don't even hold a candle in comparison.

One of my favorite books of all times, also by Joel Rosenberg, is also very hard to find on bookshelves. D'shai

D'Shai by Joel Rosenberg.

It's actually out of print, and I just found my copy while going through some of my boxes of stored books.

It is REALLY good. It's a sort of medieval Japanese society with castes and magic abilities. It's a fantasy murder mystery. There's even a sequel, "Hour of the Octopus", also out of print.

Joel Rosenberg died last year :(
