  1. Suit

Like some of the other guys suggested, Suitsupply is the way to go. Being that you're in Portland, so there's a location in Seattle, so going in person is going to be the absolute best option, make a day trip out of it and bring a (well-dressed?) friend to get an outside opinion. I'd even suggest calling in ahead of time and explaining the situation and they'll probably make accommodations if they know you're coming in specifically to get a suit from them. A single-breasted solid navy or grey is going to be your best choice. These are classic suit colors that are simple, versatile and as long as you make sure they're well-tailored, (which SS will do for you in-house) you'll look great almost anywhere. I would personally suggest a mid-grey Napoli, which is their most popular cut, but they may have other suggestions for you dependent on your skin tone, body shape etc. Stay away from patterns or other colors for this suit, a charcoal pinstripe or double-breasted windowpane suit is your 4th or 5th suit, not your first.

  2. Shoes

First off, don't do loafers or deck shoes or sneakers, it'll throw off the whole deal. The shoe color will depend on the suit color somewhat, but a classic wingtip or captoe (thanks /u/shakerattleandrollin) like the Strand is a good versatile choice. You can sometimes pick them up on clearance on AE's site or use Shoebank, which is AE's factory seconds site, to find them at a substantial discount. You may also want to check out Meermin Mallorca's offerings as well. They're less expensive than full price AE's and are shipped from Spain, but they get good reviews. In regards to color, like I said, it depends on the suit, but a black or dark brown shoe will go with most colors, oxblood is also an option that goes with basically everything. You can use a chart like this to get an idea. As you can see, the walnut wouldn't really work with a darker suit, but you can make your own call on that.

  3. Belt

This has to do with your shoes more than anything. Get a full-grain leather belt that matches your shoes and has a regular clasp buckle. Don't get bonded leather or anything besides full-grain. Most shoe retailers offer belts, so that'll be your best bet, this may also be something you can probably pick up from SS.

  4. Shirt

Charles Tyrwhitt has excellent prices on dress shirts. A standard white, twill or poplin non-iron extra-slim fit (nevermind the name, this is a standard slim fit, the classic and slim fits are more like the portly and classic fits elsewhere) is going to go with pretty much anything and would be good to have anyways. They run sales pretty regularly (they actually have a across the board sale going on right now if you use that link). They run pretty true to size, so if you have a dress shirt that fits well already (long enough in the sleeves and not too much fabric around the waist/trunk), you can use this to dial in the sizes on CT. Get this first so you can wear it when you get your suit so they can get the sleeve lengths right on the jacket.

  5. Tie

You can pick up a silk tie from a multitude of places, I like Bows N Ties, but there's many other options as well, SS will have some in store too. A nice contrasting color to your suit will be the best choice, but nothing too shiny. A solid color will be best, but a classic stripe or other pattern works as well. I'd suggest staying away from oddball textures or patterns, like floral or knit ties as they'll be less versatile. 100% silk is the way to go.

  6. Accessories

A nice minimal dress watch and a pair of sunglasses, Wayfarers or Clubmasters will complete the look. If you opt for a french cuff shirt from CT, get a pair of simple cufflinks as well. Get a pair or two of dark dress socks as well, these can come from almost anywhere, err on the side of natural fibers (wool, cotton) for best results.

Overall, as I'm sure you've read, fit is king. Everything needs to fit right, first and foremost. A well-coordinated outfit that fits horribly will still look bad and accidental. A mismatched outfit that fits like a glove will still look better. The jacket, pants and shirt are all important. Even with a classic standard navy or grey SB suit with a white shirt and a dark tie, if it fits well, will look better than anyone else's ill-fitting department store OTR suit and it'll last you through almost any scenario. Weddings, interviews, night out, professional meetings, etc.

    Good luck!

I really like the digital timex ones you listed. They would last you a long time, the gold is a little flashy though. Thoughts on this? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00BKQT85G/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_YLyFxbESYGCRW I don't know about the reliability but they're very minimalistic.

Check out Daniel Wellington watches- they tend to fall for ~$100 on amazon.

edit: still has minute markers, but may fit the bill anyway.

Daniel Wellington

Personally I recommend this one. I got it in the blue NATO strap and I really like it. Brathwait It only comes in that brown strap but you could throw on a black one afterwards and keep the brown to match an outfit

I'm looking to buy a dress watch which goes well in more casual clothing too. Silver Case, white dial & black leather band is my preference. An example of the style I like:

Bulova Dress Watch

I'm loving the look of the Bulova one, are these any good? If not I would love some recommendations from you lovely people!

Thanks a lot
