From the people I've talked to or heard about spending any time in Japan, quite a few Americans do make a point of visiting the Hiroshima memorial park. I've personally spoken to at least two Americans who've been there, one while on a vacation and the other while doing student English teaching.

In 'Dave Barry Does Japan', Dave Berry writes one of his rare 'very serious' chapters about his and his family's visit to Hiroshima.

Most of the book is quite funny... Dave Barry and his family trying to deal with being in country where they require a translator for even very basic things, but it's a good look at how strong the desire is for Asians and the Japanese in particular to observe tradition, follow the rules, be group-minded, and save face in the event of conflicts of any kind. It's one of the first places I read 'The nail that sticks up is hammered down,' which is often what happens to Japanese children rather than 'The squeaky wheel gets the grease.'

The chapter on the Hiroshima visit is compelling and upsetting and gives a good view of how the Japanese view the bombing, how they want to view the bombing, and how they react to outside influence.

Reads like a Dave Barry column.

Dave Barry Does Japan, "Maybe the problem was that the cicadas went off at about 4:30 A.M. and apparently had gotten hold of small but powerful amplifiers."
