Fear not, Graphic Novels exist for this very reason!

A lot of people don't follow series via individual issues, mainly because it can cost so much the more series you follow. Trade Paperbacks are just collections of separate story arcs within a run (usually about 6/7 issues) at a lower price. This is a good way to go for reading up on Deadpool.

u/whiskeyboy · 19 pointsr/funny

To the latest Deadpool series? You can buy it at your local comic store or through the comixology app. I believe they are on Volume 7. Writers are Brian Posehn and Gerry Duggan.

Here is the link to the first volume on Amazon

u/MrZarq · 16 pointsr/funny

The current run, by Brian Posehn, is supposed to be good. It starts with this book: http://www.amazon.com/Deadpool-Vol-1-Dead-Presidents/dp/0785166807

There's also the run by Daniel Way, which is the one /u/p_norm is talking about, which a lot of people dislike because it is too wacky. This is the chimichanga loving, 2 inner voices having, odd-ball. A lot of people find this run to be too wacky, and that it gets Deadpool wrong, but if you're new you won't care about that. Most Deadpool fragments you see on reddit are from this run. The writer also wrote the Deadpool game. It starts here: http://www.amazon.com/Deadpool-Vol-1-Secret-Invasion/dp/0785132732/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1413815446&sr=1-1&keywords=deadpool+secret+invasion

Then there's the older run by Joe Kelly. This one is often seen as the Deadpool run. The problem is with how Marvel collected it. Issue #1 is collected in Deadpool Classic Vol. 1, together with his older mini-series, which I personally didn't like, and all the rest is in Vol. 2 onwards.

Currently, Marvel is on somewhat of a Deadpool spree, and has published a billion mini-series, most of which are good. Deadpool Kills The Marvel Universe, Deadpool Killustrated, Deadpool Kills Deadpool, Night of the Living Deadpool, Hawkeye vs. Deadpool, ...

u/dizzysaurus · 11 pointsr/movies

It's written by Brian Posehn and Gerry Duggan. The first issue has Deadpool firing at a dinosaur creature with cats flying everywhere.

http://www.amazon.com/Deadpool-Vol-1-Dead-Presidents/dp/0785166807 is the correct cover, not sure if it's just the single comic or a collected version.

Okay, based on your list, there's some fantastic stuff out there you should read.

The thing about reading comics is you've got to accept that your don't and can't know everything. Most people haven't read the entire back catalogs of their favorite character, I doubt even many writers have. Another big thing worth knowing about comics is that stories come in a few different formats. One offs are self contained stories. Most commonly you will find that your book is part of a 3-5 part story arc, so check the "backstory page" and see if it says part x of x. Lastly you have event crossovers. These are much larger storylines that affect the Marvel universe as a whole, usually lots of crossovers. As for a deadpool recommend starting point. I would recommend deadpools Marvel now relaunch

Since you did ask for a specific issue. I really enjoyed the seventh issue. Others seem to have too. It does start a new story but I would say it works as a stand alone as well.

Going to your Local Comic Book Shop is a great way to start, if it's worth anything they should be able to point you in the right direction. Deadpool got a new creative team for the current Volume 3, and it's a great jumping on point if you can get through the first story arc (which a lot of people didn't like, but is worth getting through).

You can also get Marvel Unlimited which is a digital service that gives you access to thousands of comics for a few bucks a month. Currently they're running a deal for $0.99 for the first month if you just want to try it out.

u/[deleted] · 3 pointsr/comicbooks

The "current run" is in regards to whomever is writing the book and it either comes out monthly or bimonthly, depending on which Marvel title it is. A run ends when the writer leaves the title. Right now, since the Marvel NOW relaunch, you could start at Deadpool #1 IF you can find it. You're probably better off getting this, however: http://www.amazon.com/Deadpool-Vol-Dead-Presidents-Marvel/dp/0785166807/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1380723403&sr=8-1&keywords=deadpool+vol+1+marvel+now

That's the collection of the first arc of Deadpool since the relaunch, which is meant to make things easier for readers to get into. An arc is a story. Say Deadpool hangs out with Cable for 4 issues and they kill Skrulls together (I am not a Marvel fan so this may be totally off) and then at #5 Deadpool's no longer hanging out with Cable and is off killing something else. 1-4 is an arc and 5 is starting a new arc. Each arc eventually gets collected into trades, which are the graphic novels you are referring to. Is this clear?

u/vivvav · 3 pointsr/comicbooks

Hi!

For starters, we got a big ol' recommended reading list that should suit most of your needs. Most of these characters have also had some kind of reboot/relaunch in recent years, so looking around for anything with their name attached and "Volume 1" is a pretty good way to get started if you're so inclined. For example...

Batman (note that this story is about 12 issues, so you'd want volume 2 to go along with it)

Deadpool

Spider-Man

Thor

Black Panther hasn't had anything major recently, I don't think, but he has a new series starting soon. Also please note that except for Batman and Thor, I cannot personally attest to the quality of the comics I've linked. There's also some even more recent stuff, but it's not collected yet like these are.

u/jclim00 · 3 pointsr/deadpool

Duggan's run starts off with the Dead Presidents arc and you can pick up the tpbs starting with that. Or you could sub to Marvel Unlimited for a month and just read like crazy from there :)

u/M4gikarp · 3 pointsr/Marvel

There will be little jokes here and there that you may not understand, but for the most part it is a perfect place to start your Deadpool experience! (I'm guessing your starting because you are asking about previous volumes)

Anyways, ignore the titles labeled as volumes by Amazon, as they are the volumes of the new Deadpool. The volume 4 I was referring to in my post was volume 4 to all the Deadpool comics.
And finally, here is what you should read

  1. Dead Presidents (this is where you meet Benjamin Franklin)

  2. Soul Hunter

  3. The Good, The Bad, The Ugly (One of my personal all time favorite Deadpool arcs)

  4. Deadpool vs Shield

  5. And finally, Deadpool Wedding (where the panel of this post is from) which is only for pre-order on amazon :(

It's a lot I know but it is awesome! Each volume comes directly after the previous one so I recommend you read the ones just mentioned so you understand the ones after it!

    Happy reading!
u/blahblahcleverblah · 2 pointsr/Marvel

This is pretty great. I'm not a huge Deadpool fan but I'm digging this.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/0785166807/ref=mp_s_a_1_7?qid=1407401054&sr=8-7&pi=AC_SX110_SY165_QL70

Also enjoyed how Remender wrote him in Uncanny X-Force.

u/LacklusterBodyguard · 2 pointsr/comicbooks

I think Deadpool is probably a character where you won't really be missing out by not getting his full history.
The X-men as a whole almost demand someone going back through classic stories or at least massive Wikipedia entries to understand the twists and turns and continuity that led to this spot, but since Deadpool is mostly a 4th wall breaking, wacky character, you should be able to start just about anywhere.

If you do want to start with the earliest Deadpools, Marvel released some Deadpool Classic trade paperbacks a while ago, but you really should be able to jump into any of the more recent series, like when the Deadpool craze really reached its peak beginning of Daniel Way's run, or the most recent Marvel Now! series.

u/Adam_Absence · 2 pointsr/comicbooks

Here are a handful of books that don't really need any backstory; Captain America: Winter Soldier, Iron Man: The Five Nightmares, Thor God of Thunder, Hawkeye, Spider-Man Big Time, Deadpool: Dead Presidents, and Doctor Strange: The Oath. Some of those are part of larger series that you could continue on with if you like, but those should give you a good taste of a variety of Marvel Comics without being too confused

u/Fafnesbane · 2 pointsr/comicbooks

For a good jump-on point for the current Deadpool I'd recommend the Marvel NOW Deadpool series by Gerry Duggan and Brain Poshen with art by Tony Moore and others

here's /co/'s recommended Deadpool reading, they usually have a pretty good taste. So I'd go with it if you want a Best-of reading list.

u/Wallzo · 2 pointsr/whowouldwin

Green Lantern Rebirth by Geoff Johns

Indestructible Hulk by Mark Waid

Deadpool by Brian Posehn and Gerry Dugan. Best Deadpool book in a very very very long time, and it's relatively new. The current arc is some of the best Deadpool I've EVER read.

Deathstroke & Silver Surfer I don't have any recommendations for.

u/hiphophipp0 · 2 pointsr/comicbooks

You should just read the newer Deadpool series. It's pretty character defining and wildly popular. I wouldn't be surprised if it's Deadpool's status quo for a while. Here's the amazon link

http://www.amazon.com/Deadpool-Vol-1-Dead-Presidents/dp/0785166807/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1462765396&sr=8-1&keywords=deadpool+vol+1

u/Stre8Edge · 2 pointsr/Cynicalbrit

Highly recommend anybody who is interested in the character after playing this to read the ongoing series. Its written by comedian Brian Posehn alongside Gerry Duggan, who used to write for G4's Attack of the Show. The first story arc involves Deadpool fighting former US Presidents.

u/DrellAssassin · 2 pointsr/gaming

Honestly you can start with the Marvel Now! series that started last year. Here is an Amazon link to the first 6 issues collected. The series is currently on issue #12, so you can either go to your local comic shop and pick up #7-#12 or wait for the trade paperback in a few months.

This series is hilarious and doesn't require any past knowledge of Deadpool, I'd highly recommend it.

  • Deadpool (2012): really well done, goofy superhero comic.
  • [Ms. Marvel (2014)] (http://amzn.com/078519021X): It's about a 16 year old Pakistani Muslim girl and a giant superhero fangirl who ends up becoming a hero herself.
  • [Batman (2013)] (http://amzn.com/1401235425): It's batman. Amazing art and the first few volumes are especially good.
  • [Star Wars: Shattered Empire] (http://amzn.com/0785197818): If you're a Star Wars fan definitely check this out. It takes place directly after the events of Return of the Jedi.

You're currency is worthless compared to the mighty Great British Pounds Sterling, conversion rate of 1.48 usd per 1gbp.

Luckily most graphic novel are sold worldwide at a price that's fitting to the wrecked economy of the country.

There's a reason many in the UK often import high cost (triple figure+) items from USA, even with postage, they often end up cheaper. Of course low cost items like this the difference is negligible, and ends up more after postage.

As Fafnesbane says, the sidebar has suggestions for Deadpool here.

The Joe Kelly run is available on Comixology here in Digital format (start with #1 not #0) or for a more complete reading experience in physical form check out the Deadpool Classic volumes.

  • Deadpool Classic Vol. 1 (#1, New Mutants #98, The Circle Chase & Deadpool).
  • Deadpool Classic Vol. 2 (#2-8, -1 and the Daredevil/Deadpool Annual 1997.
  • Deadpool Classic Vol. 3 (#9-17 & Amazing Spider-Man #47).
  • Deadpool Classic Vol. 4 (#18-25, #0 & Deadpool & Death Annual 1998).
  • Deadpool Classic Vol. 5 (#26-33, Baby’s First Deadpool Book #1 and Deadpool Team-Up #1).

The problem with this route is that Deadpool Classic v. 3 and 4 appear to be out of print so it might be easier to go with Comixology.

It just occurred to me that you are very likely not in the US so the physical links I sought out are probably not that handy anyway. If where you live is expensive for American comics, Comixology is almost definitely the way to go.

For what it's worth, I'm not really a Deadpool fan but Cable and Deadpool was pretty decent, but I do think you should start with this Kelly run first to get to know the character.

Or you could always just jump in with the current Marvel Now! volume if you're not fussed about starting from the beginning. It's ten issues in so far so you could either hunt down the back issues from #1 or get the Dead Presidents trade collecting #1-6 of the current run and either buy #7-current in floppies or wait for the next trade.

Deadpool Classic Volume 1 may be the best place to start since it has the first appearance of Deadpool and 2 awesome 4 part mini-series that take place before his first true solo run. This collection also has the first issue of his solo run from 1997, which is his first "true" solo run.

Next is the Joe Kelly solo run which is a really strong little ditty. I quite liked it. I want to say it's 33 issues, which takes us to the millennium.

I'm not sure what takes place here, from 2000ish to 2004ish, and I want to know. I want to read all of the Deadpool stuff, because he is my favorite solo character, and since he's been around for just over 20 years, I might be able to read it all in a small amount of time.

After that gap is what I consider to be my personal favorite, Cable & Deadpool which is very strong, poignant, and hilarious.

After that is Daniel Way and people love to jerk each other off about how bad it was. I have heard mixed reviews, some say it starts good and putters, others say it's a Flanderization of Deadpool. I haven't read it, but I plan to.

Then you got the Duggan and Posehn run which starts here and runs up to relatively recently (I think it may have ended this year). I read the first 5 volumes over the past week and a half, and have quite enjoyed it, but I like the Kelly run and C&D run better.

Also, for anybody wondering the details, I found it while sifting through this issue of Deadpool at a Barns N' Noble. Nearly shit a brick when I found out it was canonical!

Bloody dark comedy. Deadpool Vol.1 Dead Presidents

u/Aouron · 1 pointr/comicbooks

So for Batman you should definitely read the new 52 which is just as great as the older Batman classics. If you really wanna read some older stuff you should read Batman: Hush, The long halloween and the killing joke. For Deadpool you should start with his newseries. There are a few Spiderman books right now. Ultimate Comics Spider-Man is about Miles Morales, a young boy. In Scarlet Spider its about Peters Parker Clone Kaine, who is an ex-villain and now trys to be a better person. In Superior Spiderman Doc Ock has switched Bodys with Pete and is now lifing Peters life, trying to be a better Spiderman than him. Since im not much of an avengers fan i cant really tell you where to start with it.

u/rolandgrayhill · 1 pointr/deadpool

Look at the sidebar, there's a recommended reading list (and the second rule is no asking where to start, there's "no linear story anyways." However, for tpb's that aren't on the list I'd recommend Deadpool Kills The Marvel Universe and
Deadpool: Dead Presidents. Fun and over the top one shots that are quick and entertaining to read and touch on other characters in the MCU without getting really invested in them.

u/painfool · 1 pointr/Marvel

I recommend jumping right in with Brian Poseph's and Gerry Duggan's run of Deadpool Vol.3. It's funny, action packed, and manages to bring out some tender moments in Deadpool without feeling like it compromises his goofier feel.

u/IntendoPrinceps · 0 pointsr/todayilearned

Oh don't worry, it has. And it's just as glorious as you'd expect.

Deadpool- Dead Presidents

Written by none other than the illustrious duo of Brian Posehn and Gerry Duggan.
