If you play a lot of Eclipse, I swear, this will change your life:

http://www.amazon.com/Cube-Timer-Chess-Clock-Book/dp/B004S56RJG?ie=UTF8&*Version*=1&*entries*=0

We've concluded that the best setup is to give everyone a minute and a half to start, and then every time it's their turn add 20 seconds to their clock. May seem harsh at first, but ultimately it's fair and everyone will adjust immediately. We completed a 6 player game in 3 hours on the first use.

u/Tharok · 14 pointsr/boardgames

Maybe this one?

u/FigBug · 13 pointsr/boardgames

I've found the DGT Cube helps: http://www.amazon.com/DGT-Cube-Game-Clock-players/dp/B004S56RJG

It has several modes, but we use it to count up for each player. Then when one player is taking double or triple the time we can yell at them.

In my experience slow players remain slow and the is nothing significant you can do about it. Don't talk to them during their turn about non game topics, suggest good moves can make minor differences. But a slow poke will never turn into a quick player.

If they are too slow, stop inviting them.

There are a ton of games and you can find many on this subreddit and also sites like nerfhaven by searching 'game modes'...

I'll list what we have fun playing at our Philly area wars:

-King of the Hill. You need the DGT cube timer if you want to play this game but it's worth it. Two or more teams fight to capture an area, turn the timer to your team's color and try to hold the point for as long as possible, at the end of a round check the timer to see which team has the most time. Locate respawn points at each team's base (at the edge of the map) and place the hill point somewhere near the middle of the map. Just watch jangular's BURN videos to see lots of king of the hill being played, it is a very fun game. Try it with three teams sometimes and if you have just a few players it can be fun to run it as 'every player for themselves"

-capture the air horn
We've been playing this a lot lately, this game is the same as capture the flag but does not require players to return the flag to their own base, instead players simply sound the other team's air horn to win the match. We usually play this game with kill/confirmed rules instead of respawn tag rules. (Requires two air horns)

Defend the Base
One team digs in and another team assaults, pretty simple.

Defend the core
Similar to defend the base but with a "core" that acts like a goal. Each team tries to get more darts into the other team's core

Trouble in terrorist town
Just google the rules for this it's a popular game

Glorious leader
There's two teams assassins and bodyguards and one leader or VIP... one player is the glorious leader aka VIP and he/she has a squad of body guards, their team's objective is to visit several points on the map and then extract the glorious leader but if the leader is tagged the game is over. The way we play this is with unbalanced teams (VIPs team has more players) and unbalanced tag out rules (infinite respawns for the assassins but the VIPs team has kill/confirmed tagout rules)

There's a lot more but those are my favorites as of now. KotH is my absolute top favorite game though.

I got the DGT Cube Timer as a gift. In short, it's the best gaming accessory I could ever use.

We started to realize that those who took longer turns tended to win (particularly in euros). Our competitive nature led the rest of us to take longer turns so as not to be left behind. This created a sort of spiral effect that was poisoning the atmosphere of game night.

Now we use the cube timer. No one needs to be a jerk about telling someone to hurry up with their turn because the timer does that for us. We play our games in less time and they feel more competitive than ever. As a couple side bonuses, it's a good way to remind everyone whose turn it is and it also serves as a definitive "my turn is over, no more takesies-backsies" token.

They're £20 on amazon.co.uk. Comes out to about $30 after shipping/conversion. It let me sign in and buy with my US account.

u/ThunderKrunk · 5 pointsr/Nerf

On the contrary; you will find that veteran members of the groups actually spend a decent amount of money to keep the games going or make the games better.

Flags, flag poles, flag pole mounts, the DGT Cuber Timers, community dart bin for dart rentals, bottled water, ice, cooler, first aid kit supplies, pop-up canopy, other props for different game type, etc. all cost money.

The cost, time, and effort all add up if you play monthly. Yeah, you can charge $5 for the dart rental every month; but it really doesn't make the nerf group money. The money goes towards new darts that need to be replaced every so often, new stuff like Rival HIRs come out and need to be added to the rental system, props need to be replaced, medical equipment is generally one time use, and some medical stuff expires (so it needs to be inventoried each month).

Generally, that is why you will find that your average event host is in their mid 20's and older. Because nerf even upkeep requires a steady income from a job/career.

I'm not saying all that is necessary for successful nerf group; but BURN continues to grow and its been around for 6-7 years. NoBACoN based their group off of BURN, EBAN plays at the same venue, and other groups have spawned under the Bay Area Nerf umbrella. So, I would say it is a successful example; but it is definitely not the only example.

I picked up a 6 player turn clock to help speed the game up. https://www.amazon.com/DGT-Cube-Timer-Chess-Clock/dp/B004S56RJG

Everyone's timer for each turn is set at 1:30, and it shames you into making moves. Once someone decides they are doing something like building units, we generally move to the next players turn unless the build of units has an impact in what the next player plans to do. We pause the timers for combats and resolving secondary strategy card abilities. The colors of the cube are even 5/6 right, which can help identify "Who's turn is it? Who's next?" which also helps speed the game up. It is generally the responsibility of the person who currently holds the cube to find the person who's turn it is next and hand it off to them, although sometimes I still have to be on top of moving the turns along. We have done the last few games in 1h/player, which is pretty good!

u/finalsound · 3 pointsr/boardgames

i would win this card every time in my group. i can be slow but i am getting better. ap is a horrible thing.

i've been thinking about getting a DGT Cube

u/iithisiiguyii · 3 pointsr/boardgames

I've always wanted to get this timer ( https://smile.amazon.com/DGT-Cube-Timer-Chess-Clock/dp/B004S56RJG/) but I can't justify the cost. It would be great to see who spend the most time on their turns throughout any game.

You're probably paying more for them though, but that's where I ordered mine.

the "DGT Cube". 6 sides, all different color, when your color is up, it counts that time. you can count up or down from a specific time. its really nice. thankfully, i haven't needed mine since that day. almost worth the price for that. except its been sitting for a year now...

This is my favorite board game accessory by far, but it isn't DIY...https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004S56RJG/

I would venture to say that it's hard to conclude anything with the details you've given. From a pure "time" standpoint, 4 hours does seem long, but for a finale quest, I can see that taking longer because the stakes are higher.

I know with our group, in the beginning, a lot of time was eaten up understanding how the AI works, making sure we made good decisions for the AI, and questioning all the rules that made no sense or were different than the base game. This is/was also exasperated by owning all the things in Descent (new monsters, new minor rules to look up, etc). Games took 3+ hours when we started.

However, our last session, we blew through 2 full quests + purchased skills + everything in between in about 3.5 hours because we are a lot more familiar with everything.

We've found:

  • Playing earlier in the day can actually help speed the game up
  • Training everyone to use the app helps a lot too, vs one person being in control all the time, because people then tend to help out more with fetching new monster groups, etc
  • Having everyone really think about their roles after the first quest helps a ton, because your skills should really be mostly planned out by the time you earn the XP to buy them
  • Have hard rules about taking back turns should eliminate some time
  • Have less quarterbacking, let people make their own decisions. Co-op games take longer when people tell other people what to do (at least, i've found).
  • Stop worrying about winning/losing. This is probably the biggest time saver/waster in coop games. Descent tries to be designed in a way that you won't win 100% of the time. Especially when playing with a human overlord (The AI is a bit easier unfortunately).

Try playing with one of these (https://www.amazon.com/Cube-Timer-Chess-Clock-Book/dp/B004S56RJG) or a timer of your choice and see if there is one particular person who takes longer than others. Just having a timer of some sort will usually push people to play faster.

There exist 6 sided timing cubes that enable balanced turn taking among other things:

6- sided timing cube

https://www.amazon.com/DGT-Cube-Timer-Chess-Clock/dp/B004S56RJG

I don't have one of these (yet), but I plan to someday when I have the funds. It times your turn when your side of the cube is upright. Use it and implement a house rule that if you have the longest time at the end of the game, you cannot win. That player is eliminated. If the next winner is now the longest, they do not win either.

Could add a fun spin!

Obviously not a phone app and a little bit on the pricey side, but I have one of these timer cubes which works well if you're trying to put a time limit on a game with more than 2 players.

u/BryleC · 2 pointsr/boardgames

I've been looking for an app timer for a while but haven't been able to find something satisfactory. I think it's cool your providing something to the community.

Currently I use this: https://www.amazon.ca/DGT-Cube-Game-Clock-players/dp/B004S56RJG

That cube works wonders.

Your app is the best I've seen on the store and I'll definitely give it a spin on game night. Here are my critiques:

- I don't like how many clicks it takes me to get to the timer. I think the initial UI could be more streamlined with the option to start a quick game right off the bat. All your extra features are useful, but for a basic user like myself they bring bloat to my experience.

- Why can't I add custom players in a quick game? When timing, I'd like to see a couple low opacity letters of the players name being used on their colour. That'll help with "which colour are you again?". I felt the player circles could be more spaced out and engaged as well.

- It seems that the round setting is set to on by default. It resets this back to on between plays. I do not like this.

u/Coastal_Sasqtch · 2 pointsr/boardgames

He owns this one, but I didn't realize it was so expensive. Maybe there are similar, cheaper ones.

u/mrremag · 1 pointr/boardgames

probably this one (most famous one I think) but it's pretty expensive

if you don't care about precision/fine with a pre-set timer, this one will probably do fine as well

I would love to try this: https://www.amazon.com/Cube-Timer-Chess-Clock-Book/dp/B004S56RJG

If only I could get a game group to use it.

u/mdillenbeck · 1 pointr/boardgames

That was something I was thinking about in my variant.

I considered designating one circle as a "lead player" circle and one as a "cross-table player" circle. Then players would take turns in pairs simultaneously. However, the problem is one player would most likely stall and want to watch what the other selects rather than going simultaneously. After all, knowing what your opponent does affects your choices. Thus I nixed that idea.

I fully get that it would have downtime issues at higher player counts, but unless you do something like implement a turn timer (such as the DGT cube), the only solution I could give is chat and enjoy. Of course, down time is a matter of perspective - I play wargames, so waiting 20-30 minutes for a turn is not unheard of. I've also played Talisman 2E with about 20 players and all expansions in an all night session; that was interesting experience, where people would chat between turns or go get food. Of course, that was also back in the pre-internet days...

u/wolframajax · 1 pointr/bloodbowl

I use a DGT game timer for my games unless someone is a newbie. I have this timer for board games where people I play with suffer from analysis paralysis and it really helps keep people focused. It also just happens to work with blood bowl.
https://www.amazon.com/DGT-Cube-Timer-Chess-Clock/dp/B004S56RJG

We also use Illegal Procedure and after getting popped for it , most people quickly learn. I cant imagine playing in a league that does not. The games would be completely lopsided in the amount of time one player gets.

u/ComradeJim270 · 1 pointr/EDH

My playgroup (and most members in it when they go to other groups) have a very firm rule: the maximum game size is four players. If it's just us and there's five someone either opts to sit out until next game or we break in to pods and move people around. Either of these are better than a game with more than four people.

There's a couple ways to deal with your problem.

One is to say that if someone makes a play, makes it clear that they're making a play and nobody says they have any response then it happens. "I would have countered that?" Too bad dude. You had your chance and were too busy dicking around on your phone. Basically, make it so people will naturally get punished for not paying attention.

For people taking too long a chess clock is also possible, a la MTGO. Something like this. Figure out how long it takes someone to get through a game if they're actually playing at a reasonable pace and use that to determine what to set the clock to. Allow for time to tank on difficult turns, but not to agonize over every decision or play twenty questions about the game state. Once you have, pass it with the turn. Once someone's time runs out they lose the game. They'll be strongly incentivized to move at a reasonable pace.

u/meeshpod · 1 pointr/boardgames

I did a search for multiplayer chess clock, and found this one recommended on an old /r/boardgames thread.
https://www.amazon.com/Cube-Game-Timer-Chess-Clock/dp/B004S56RJG

Looks like it is a cube, that runs a time for whichever side/color is facing up at the time. So you just flip it to the next players color when a turn is completed. Not quite as discrete as a clock with a multiplayer/lap button like you described, but it's a step in the right direction.

But I second some others' suggestion, that confronting someone with hard data should be done after* mentioning the issue to them previously. It would seem harsh to me, if I were being slow and was presented with collected data on my issue before I knew anyone had a problem with it. This cube, could be used publicly in the group which would be better than a secret timer mechanism.

update: I see /u/misskinky already mentioned it. Sorry for the redundancy.
