Dibs is a touching, non-fictional book.

Wow! Thanks for this link! I never knew I was a minimalist. There are definitely some good ideas in here that I hadn't thought about, but this is definitely right in line with my train of thought. I already made the "no character toy" rule before she was born and have been focused on toys that will last and are multifunctional. I want open-ended toys that are going to nurture her creativity and give her the most options for her play.

I read the book Dibs in Search of Self , which is a book about Play Therapy, but it completely changed my way of looking at a child's play and the toys that foster it. The way a child plays is super important for development. If you are looking for an educational good read, read this book. It's in the form of a story, but it's phenomenal. I'm so glad I read it before I had kids because it's made me so much more confident and respectful of her budding abilities.

Edit: After thinking further about the book suggestion, I need to add that the book was written in the sixties, so there are outdated views of both autism and Dibs' mother. But the gem of the book is Dibs himself and his interactions in the play room. I'm not one to dismiss something in its entirety just because I don't agree with a segment. It really is an enlightening read regarding the capabilities of even young children and how play facilitates growth.
