I have this cable and it works well.
I have it plugged into an ASmedia 3.1 port on my asus Z170 pro gaming board, going into a hub, which does not have its power supply connected.
From that hub I have connected two of my sensors, both detected in USB3 mode, no major issues.
I did need a power supply like this one for the extension cable though, any other power supply configuration would give me errors.
EDIT: I am experiencing an issue though where my PC will not boot if I shut it down with the active cable inserted.
I have to remove the active cable, turn off my PC psu for ~10 sec then turn it back on, boot up the PC and then reconnect the active cable.

You'll be best off with a powered hub, if you're going to keep that set-up. Something like this, for example.
