Preferred writing and teaching style is quite subjective. As a book using only VHDL I have Ashenden (see https://www.amazon.com/Digital-Design-VHDL-Embedded-Approach/dp/0123695287 ) which I think explains good. The new edition of Morris Mano (see https://www.amazon.com/Digital-Design-Introduction-Verilog-SystemVerilog/dp/0134549899) seems to also cover VHDL; I have the 5th edition which I like very much, but it's using Verilog.
