Here's what worked for me (also filipino descent).
Stop shaving. When I started epilating my armpits they got much lighter. Waxing works too. Still not perfect but vast improvement. Exfoliate once in awhile. Another perk is before I'd shave almost every day, now after years of epilating the hair growth is totally dead so I only do it once a week.
Next, I switched to Dove Clear Tone antipersperant, http://www.amazon.com/Dove-Advanced-Beauty-AntiPerspirant-Deodorant/dp/B0063B1590 there's lots of similar out there, but this one was easy to find at any store. Boom, light armpits. And my doc thought it was my weight (though, YMMV of course)
Have you heard of Dove Cleartone? I bought it recently because my right armpit has some darkness I don't fancy. Works like a charm, and the results showed after a week of regular use.
