One of the strong points about RPGs as a genre is that they are designed to immerse you into a world, story and character. Thus, the answer is going to be "generally yes" but you may or may not like them.

There are two general styles of RPGs - linear and non-linear. In a linear game there is a story that plays out exactly as designed. You mainly fight the battles, make small choices such as whether you should pursue a side quest and customize the character's stats. In general, Japanese RPGs tend to be linear (JRPGs). A prime example of this is the Final Fantasy series.

In a non-linear game there is an open world, no defined order for most quests and typically you are given at least two choices in every quest (one good, one evil) that may change things in the game. These worlds are more like sandboxes that are designed to give you the freedom to create your own story. Western RPGs tend to have these features, stemming from the influence of Dungeons and Dragons on early RPGs in the West. Non-linear RPGs include Skyrim and Fallout 3.

If you want to try something in the middle, I would suggest trying out the Witcher 2. Alternatively, you might like Dragon Age Origins where you control a small party.

I don't know exactly what happened but it seems Amazon is out of stock and that might have pushed the price up.

That sucks about being Xbox only - I got the ultimate edition for when it was only ten bucks and that seems like it was a wonderfully beautiful sale, historically speaking. One thing you should know though is that the PC version of DA:O is significantly better than the 360 version because the PC community put a lot of effort into making mods for the game. DA2 didn't get nearly as much treatment, and a lot of DA:O would have been unplayable without mods. Many of the mods were turned into in-game features with Awakening, but you can't access that content while playing Origins alone (Awakening is like starting a new campaign).

As for GOTY editions - they've surely had time to prepare one to buy into the hype BEFORE Mass Effect 3 ended the trilogy. They're certainly not going to make one more than a year after it came out. If it's something you're willing to pay for, I would get Lair of the Shadow Broker for ME2 and Citadel for ME3. Mass Effect 1 had no DLC to speak of (BDtS was very minor and Pinnacle Station was frustrating and had no effect on the game to boot!). With EA removing the online pass for ME2 (called Cerberus Network), you'll get a decent chunk of free DLC for that game.

Yes, there are some other good ones. Leviathan is decent but Omega is not worth $15 or whatever they sell it at.

I don't think you should hold your breath for a GOTY edition of any entry in the series. They've moved on.

You can get DAO:Ultimate for $6.00 on Amazon if you don't mind installing on Origin.

Amazon.com has a recommendation engine that will show you what other people purchased after looking at Dragon Age Origins: Ultimate Edition:

http://www.amazon.com/Dragon-Age-Origins-Ultimate-Download/dp/B004APAEHA/

There is a section at the bottom of the page that states "Customers who bought this also bought:"

Dragon Age 2
Mass Effect 2

etc etc.

This might be a good way to find what you are looking for.

FYI - I work for Amazon in the Digital Video Games group but thought this information might be helpful.

Cheers,
Tony
